Dr. Thomas Mutter is one of my favorite characters in history. Orphaned at a young age, he climbed the ranks of medicine until he became one of the preeminent surgeons in the beginning stages of plastic surgery. Some techniques used today were first invented by Mutter himself. I’ve been teaching at local co-ops in my area for over 3 years and also homeschool kids all over the world over zoom for the same amount of time.
None: but they may enjoy the books listed in the sources. They might also want a pen and paper to take notes or jot down questions for the question and answer time!
Dr. Thomas Mutter had a vast collection of medical specimens he used to teach his students about diseases and physical traumas they may not see otherwise, and they are now housed in the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia. We will be looking at some of those items, which include skulls and plaster molds of medical conditions. There are also some images of drawings of of Dr. Mutter’s patients before surgery.
Dr. Mutter’s Marvels by Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz is the quintessential book on all things Dr. Thomas Mutter. I used that for much of my study, as well as the Mutter Museum and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia websites for research. I often use many websites or books when researching and cross-referencing for my classes, like the websites listed above, but also History.com, britannica.com, and Smithsonian.com. Other books I utilized is Mutter Museum: Historic Medical Photographs and The Mutter Museum Of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia by Gretchen Worden.
