Class Experience

Have you ever listened to the musical Hamilton and had a desire to learn more? This is the class for you!
We will explore the life of Alexander Hamilton through the lens of the popular musical, expanding upon many of the areas that were only briefly mentioned. We expand upon topics such as how Hamilton got to America, his real age, his relationship with his friends and the Schuylers, and his political downfall.
In addition, we will explore the inaccuracies of the musical, and discuss why the choice to change the story was made.
Specifically, we'll discuss the following songs: "Alexander Hamilton", "Aaron Burr, Sir", "The Story of Tonight",

This class is a mix of a lecture and trivia game, where students can guess what the actual history was before it was changed for the musical. Students are encouraged (but never forced) to participate via raising their hands, discussing with other students, and using the chat to submit their answers. At the end, we will see which team (The Federalists vs. The Democratic Republicans) knew more of the fun facts! (Example Question: Which of Hamilton's political rivals popularized ice cream in the United States? Answer: Thomas Jefferson)

No experience is required for this class, but it will be more interesting if the student has listened to Hamilton: An American Musical.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Although Hamilton is a musical that can be enjoyed by all ages, it does deal with some more mature themes. There is explicit language and adult content throughout the musical, but it is not discussed during class.
Supply List
It is not necessary, but it may be helpful for some students to have access to the musical lyrics during class. As this class is based around Hamilton: An American Musical, the class flows most smoothly if the student has listened to the songs before class. Both of these resources can be found online for free.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Quinn Norris and I'm so excited to be teaching on Outschool.

I recently graduated cum laude with a double major in Political Science and Public Policy with a minor in History. During my time at school I was lucky to explore my passions at my home institution in Delaware, as well as study abroad locations throughout Europe and Africa.

I enjoy spending my time reading books ("Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children", "The Outsiders", "Percy Jackson and the Olympians"), learning about the history behind popular musicals ("Hamilton", "Newsies", "Les Mis"), and mastering more artistic pursuits such as drawing, baking, and hair braiding. As I am deeply passionate about all these areas, they are what I choose to teach lessons about.

I believe I am qualified to teach these lessons, as I have practical experience in each one. Regarding books, I have been a tutor for years, focusing in writing, which has helped me to understand the best ways to teach students in a fun and engaging way. My love of musicals comes from working with many local productions, both on and off the stage. While I enjoy performing, I've found that I'm most useful working in costume, set design, lighting, and sound. I have a lot of experience in my artistic pursuits, as I have been an art teacher at a summer camp for four years, have worked as a hair stylist in a boutique, and run a small business selling art.

Engagement during lessons is very important to me, and I do my best to make classes fun and interesting for the students. I believe that a student learns best when they have the chance to participate, so my classes are based around discussion and involvement.

I hope you've gotten to know me a little better, and I hope to see you in my classroom!

Thank you!
Quinn
