Extra! Extra! Learn All About It! In this one time course, students will explore the history of Halloween, learning its ancients origins and its progression to become one of the biggest sugar-filled holidays around the world.

How did Halloween become a child's favorite night filled with costumes, and candy, and fun! Travel back in time with us as we explore the beginnings of Halloween through the cultures and civilizations that created and changed it.

We will first explore the Celts, the beginning of this tale, as they celebrate Samhain. What was it? How did they celebrate it? And, how did that get changed into Captain America and Sleeping Beauty costumes? We will trace the changes to Halloween through the adoption of it by countries in Europe and the spread to North America. We will look at the history of costumes, jack-o-lanterns, and some other fun traditions. We will then compare it to what we know today and how things have changed over time. The students will leave class with a solid understanding of the origins of this ancient day and how it has been changed over time.

Class will be interactive with lots of discussion, an activity, and a presentation. A handout will be provided before class starts, but no additional outside resources will be needed.

The content will be age appropriate, but please be aware that this is a class about Halloween, so some scary topics or ideas will be covered that highlights the foundation and changes of Halloween.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of ancient cultures, Halloween, and the modern transformation of the holiday. Students will also work on group/peer collaboration and interactive communication.

I have been challenging and elevating students for over 10 years to delve deeply into the issues of our past and wrestle with the realities of our present and future. Each conversation will be open and honest but guided with the necessary care for students of this age. I believe it is our job as educators to not teach children what to think- but how to think and allow them to unearth the truths that are often hidden within the words of pages.
