The History Herald: British History for the Middle School Mind! Part Two! Extra! Extra- Learn All About It! Join us for Part Two of the amazing history of the British Isles! This is a group class with Teacher Courtney that adventures through the history of the Isles of Britain and brings the past to life! In this 12-week course, we will travel back through the history of the England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales from the Gregorian Era through the modern era while focusing on the major events, themes, and people that impacted the development of the islands. We will also learn how to "understand" and research history like a historian. Each week, the students will learn a historical research skill that will aid them in breaking down and analyzing history while helping them build critical thinking skills. Some skills that will be addressed are Chronological Thinking, Source Analysis, Inference, Relevance, and Summarizing. Week One- The British Empire, Revolutions, and Enlightenment Week Two- The Industrial Revolution Week Three- The British Empire & Victoria Week Four- Parliament and Reform Week Five- WWI Week Six- Changes, Ireland, & Revolution Week Seven- The Great Depression and The Beginnings of WWII Week Eight- WWII Week Nine - End of an Empire Week Ten- The Cold War Week Eleven- Parliament, Progress, Thatcher Week Twelve- European Union and the Modern UK Some key figures that we will discuss: Queen Victoria Edward VIII Winston Churchill Elizabeth II Margaret Thatcher And More! This is a beginner’s class, so previous knowledge is not necessary. We work together through group readings, conversations, slides, games, video clips and activities to use our critical thinking skills to unravel and discover how these civilizations was born, developed, and grew throughout its lifetime. Please note that there are some sensitive topics that will be addressed throughout the course including but not limited to: genocide, slavery, and sectional violence. Students will need a copy of "The Story of Britain from the Norman Conquest to the European Union" by Patrick Dillion. Additional content will be provided for the student by the teacher if necessary. Each week, we will cover a certain period, and students will be required to read the roughly 20-25 pages from the book or readings given by the teacher. With activities included, the handout should be around 7-10 pages. I will also add games, videos, and slides to bring the content to life! The book is fantastic and weaves the complicated story of Great Britain into a vivid story like creation. It is a book that the student will be able to keep and utilize for years to come. It can be purchased many places, but at the moment it costs about 20.00 on Amazon. So, join us on a historical adventure through the British Isles!
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of British history and work to strengthen their critical thinking skills through historical analysis. They will discover the major events of British history and how they worked to create the isles we know today. We will use historical sources to dive into the past and do so in fun, engaging ways!

Parental Guidance
Please be advised that this is a history class, and there are topics that will be taught/discussed that are of a sensitive nature: slavery, war, genocide etc. Each topic will be handled appropriately, but please consider the ability of your child to work through difficult content.
