Class Experience

In this one-time fun and interactive class, students will learn all about The Great Fire of London. Students do not need to have any prior knowledge of the event.

The class will run as follows:

2 minutes: Introductions.

5 minutes: We will all sing the song 'London's Burning'. (Words will be on the screen and it doesn't matter if students don't know it!) Then we will talk about what the song really means and where it comes from.

5 minutes: I will talk a little bit about how the Great Fire of London started in Pudding Lane, using some powerpoint slides to show the learners pictures and photographs.

5 minutes: We will read a diary extract from Samuel Pepys which tells us more about the fire. Students will pretend to be History Detectives and try to solve the puzzle. What is Samuel Pepys talking about? What really happened?

5 minutes: What happened? We will find out about how Londoners dealt with the fire, using leather buckets and gunpowder.

5: A New London: We learn about how London was rebuilt by Christopher Wren. Learners will be given the opportunity to briefly draw their own design for a new St Paul's Cathedral.

3: Sequence challenge! Working as a group, learners will be challenged to put six events in the correct order in which they happened. Can they beat the clock and stop the fire from spreading!
