What's included
1 live meeting
20 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
Each week a new song will be introduced: some brief background information will be given and we'll talk about the lyrics and any unfamiliar vocabulary. Depending on the song, we may discuss instruments that it could have been performed with, different versions of the song that exist, or what purpose the song was used for originally (dancing? work?). We will take time to discuss learners' connections between the song and any prior experience they bring: for example, if a child has seen a performance of Irish dancing they would be welcome to briefly share about that if the song we're learning about is Irish music. Or if they have read about canals, we could make connections between what they've read and the song 'Erie Canal'. Then learners will have a chance to sing along with the teacher as I sing and play the song. As a Charlotte Mason style homeschooling parent, folk song study is something I have done with my own children for many years. Lyrics will be displayed on screen. The focus of this class is not on vocal technique or music note reading; the focus is on learning about and enjoying the songs. This class is best for kids who have some reading ability to keep up with the lyrics. At the end of each class we may sing a song from a previous week, but new students will be able to easily jump in and learn with us. Week 1- Drill, Ye Tarriers Week 2- Arkansas Traveler Week 3- Auld Lang Sang Week 4- Waltzing Matilda Week 5- Aiken Drum Week 6- My Grandfather's Clock Week 7- The Erie Canal Week 8+ To be announced
Learning Goals
Students will become familiar with the lyrics and tunes of new folk songs and learn the big idea that folk songs have lots of purposes and styles.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
A lot of folk songs deal with difficult issues; the most tragic or disturbing of these will be avoided in this class, but be aware that some characters in the songs will die. Example: In the song 'My Grandfather's Clock' the grandfather character in the song dies and the clock stops ticking.
Religiously-focused songs or songs focused on drinking alcohol will not be chosen for this class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
All the folk songs chosen will be in the public domain.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, My name is Mrs. VW.
I teach music and other classes on Outschool.
I have experience teaching orchestra, band, choir and general music in school classrooms and for private groups such as home school and fine arts organizations. I have over 15 years of experience teaching private instrument lessons, mainly string instruments and piano.
Our world is full of beauty and I love helping others tune in to notice, create and share beautiful things.
When I'm not teaching or creating music, I enjoy reading and learning new things!
Note:
If you are thinking of purchasing a string instrument in preparation for a class, you are welcome to message me about good quality but still affordable recommendations. Buying a too-cheap and poorly made 'violin shaped object' off Amazon or other sellers can result in frustrations with an instrument that breaks, is hard to tune, hard to play etc.
