Homework

1-2 hours per week. Review for this class is very important. Students will be given printable worksheets to complete each week, Quizlets, and videos to review in between lessons.

Assessment

There will be an informal final KAHOOT assessment on the final day of class covering all hiragana learned in class. Learning a language takes review, review, and more review. I tell kids that a learning assessment is like a treasure hunt to find the things that they do NOT know so those things can be mastered.

In this 12 lesson course, students will be introduced to the entire Hiragana alphabet (46 characters) an how to read and write them. Hiragana is the most used syllabary in Japan and is what Japanese children learn first. It is followed by Katakana, and Kanji. Each lesson, students will be introduced to the target hiragana will fun videos, games, and mnemonics. Not only will students learn hiragana, but they will also be introduced to a wealth of beginning Japanese vocabulary. It is the perfect launch 🚀 to studying Japanese language.

I have been teaching on Outschool since 2020, and it has been an amazing journey. I lived in Japan for over sixteen years teaching English to young people and adults, while also studying Japanese.  I spent the majority of my time in the Kansai region, and raised my son in Japan until he was ten. My daughters also spent two years in Tokyo studying in one of the oldest Japanese Elementary schools in Japan - Meiji Elementary.   Not only do I have the experience of learning Japanese as a non-native speaker, but I have also supported my own children on their journey of learning English and Japanese as native and second language learners.  I have a BA from Eastern Michigan University in Japanese Language and Culture Studies and have passed the highest level of the JLPT (N1)
