Class Experience

The purpose of this class is to teach learners to safely enjoy a day hike in the woods. Both brand new and seasoned hikers will benefit from attending this class. We will start with introductions and a brief overview of the topics to be covered. Checklists will also be provided for each category. There will be a ten minute stretch/snack/chat break after making GORP.

Topics will include:

Attire: dressing for changes in altitude; dressing for rainy weather; supportive footwear and the right kind of socks

Tick Prevention: what ticks are and why we need to protect ourselves; tucking pants into socks and wearing long sleeves if cool enough

Trail Safety: the importance of staying on the trail and following trail markers

Nutrition: eating and hydrating while active; what snacks to bring; recognizing low blood sugar and what to do about it; we will make GORP and take a ten minute stretch/snack/chat break.

Carry-In-Carry-Out: what it means and why it's important (taking trash with you)

First Aid: what to pack in a first aid kit; what to do if someone gets an injury that cannot be treated with the first aid kit (calling for help, don't take off your shoe if you suspect an ankle sprain, elevating injured areas, don't move the person who is injured.)

Tick Checks: checking for ticks once out of the woods

At the end of class, we will talk about the purpose of having a 24-hour emergency bag when we go hiking and we will assemble one together.

Learning Goals

Learners will be fully prepared for a safe day hike in the woods. They will know how to prepare themselves and will be able to keep themselves and others safe on a day hike.
