Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Students wil learn which parts of resumes are essential to have to catch employers' attention. They will also learn key details to have in cover letters and how formatting of formal business cover letters makes a huge difference in getting noticed by recruiters. The class will be taught via screenshare of resume templates and a sample resume. I will also encourage discussion among participants and solicit questions. Students are not required to have any resume writing experience.
The class structure is:
First 3-5 minutes: greetings and assessing prior resume writing experience.
10 m: Learn what a resume is and why resumes are important to start writing in high school.
20m: Powerful templates for resumes, what to include, what order to put education and experience in.
15m: Teacher write a draft of a sample resume based on student feedback and experience.
5m: Wrap up- questions students may have, option to post their resumes for feedback in classroom.

Learning Goals

Students will become more aware of how they present themselves in a written context. Students will learn to be aware of non-academic language in business writing.

I am an experienced middle and high school English teacher who has previously worked with students in writing resumes, cover letters, and practing interview skills. Having re-written my own resume and cover letters throughout the years as I've moved up in the field of education to administration, I have a unique lens on how to develop hiring materials that will catch the recruiters' eyes. I also provide services as a career mentor to graduate students at Capella University, where I recently received my EdD.
