US Grade 5 - 8
In this class, the students will learn how to develop a basic 5 sentence paragraph. As a Doctor of Education I understand the importance of a strong foundation in writing. Teaching students to develop a basic paragraph with complex sentences prepares students for high school and beyond. Through out the lesson, students will learn these four topics: 1) Topic Sentences a. How to develop a strong topic sentence b. What makes an interesting topic sentence c. How to identify the qualities of a topic sentence 2) Supporting Details a. How to organize details to support the topic sentence b. How to incorporate quality details c. How to identify a strong supporting detail sentence 3) Concluding sentences a. How to develop a strong concluding sentence b. How to summarize the paragraph without being redundant c. How to identify the qualities of a concluding sentence 4) Complex sentence structure a. How to improve the basic sentence to a higher level of writing b. What makes a sentence complex c. How to decide when to use a complex sentence To accomplish these topics, students will receive direct instruction through lecture, practice with identifying parts of a paragraph through interactive class games, and time to practice writing through one homework assignment. I adjust my teaching to the needs of the students. If there is a specific style of learning that your child needs, let me know ahead of time so that I can tailor the activities to your child. My students are allowed to engage as much or as little as they want in the class. I ask questions, invite conversation, and create an engaging environment. At the end of class, I assign one paragraph as homework for the students to develop on their own. I provide feedback on Sunday and Monday for every class each week.

Welcome!
I am Dr. Sarah Hopkins, Ed.D. I am currently a Dean of Students and have been teaching for almost a decade. I have taught 4th grade, junior high Social Studies, and high school AP history, special education, and student leadership.
I am excited to offer a variety of technical writing classes and fun book clubs for a wide range of students.
As a Doctor of Education I understand the technical aspects of writing and love teaching students how to craft meaningful essays and papers. My writing classes are designed to teach high school students the best practices for research papers and persuasive essays, using MLA and APA format, to help prepare for college. These classes are designed for groups but I can offer additional 1:1 classes for students who want more practice and feedback.
Additionally, I am an avid reader and believe that reading accelerates a child's learning. To spark a love of reading, I offer book clubs for students of all age groups. I currently focus my book clubs on Mystery series (books based on age groups) but will design courses upon request. If you have a favorite genre, let me know!
I can't wait to get started!
