This class is taught in English.
I have been working as a private tutor for grades 5-12 in Science and English since 1999. I also worked as student mentor to post doctoral and summer student fellows for over ten years while I worked as a Research Chemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. During my work there, I had the opportunity to become and author in a text book on high resolution mass spectometry and as well as being part of a documentary on the Discovery Channel. Previous to my work at Woods Hole, I worked as a chemical technician in a local environmental lab working on land and water pollution. During the summer, I also was blessed with the most incredible opportunity of working as a naturalist on a whale watch boat. Following my time working in research, I owned and operated a childcare for over 7 years where I taught preschool and tutored grade school children in the afternoon. I earned my B.S. in Cellular/Molecular Biology with a minor in Biochemistry from Bridgewater State University in 2000 and a M.S. in Education in 2015 from Walden University. Currently I am working on my M.S. in Biology with a specialization in Environmental Sciences from the University of Nebraska, Kearney. I have loved teaching and mentoring students of all ages and am thankful to add online teaching to my experiences in education. I am a huge advocate of online learning since it has not only benefited me, but my children as well.
Each week the students will be provided with a recording to listen to as well as assigned weekly readings on the classroom board and a discussion question that students will be required to respond to. I ask that all students participate in one or more of the weekly activities by Sunday each week. Each student will also be provided with their own individual login to ck-12, which is a site I will be using to provide additional assignments for the students. This site is designed for students to work at their own pace. Students will also be provided with a project that will begin on the second week. This project will be a research project and will be explained further throughout the course.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
The teacher will create the logins for Ck-12 for each individual student, no personal information will need to be provided by the student. For the research project, students may need to research information for their projects online. Parental guidance when using the internet is advised. I take Sundays off to spend with my children, so I may not reply to students' emails until the following Monday if emails are sent past 8 pm EST on Saturday. I may not see these emails until Monday.
