Speech Communications and Public Speaking
Class experience
This Speech Communications class is a one semester (12-week) class. By the end of the semester students will have learned tips on how to overcome their fear of public speaking, how to enhance their speaking style and delivery, and how to organize a speech. Students will also deliver three speeches throughout the course. Here is glance at what we will cover each week: Week 1 - Feelings about giving a speech. Why is speech class even a required high school course? When will you ever give...
Students will learn that giving a speech isn't always just standing at a podium and talking to a large audience. Speech is an important element of our everyday lives and can portray a lot about a person. Our goal in this class is to equip students with the confidence they need to not only speak in front of large groups, but to succeed in interviews, sharing their passions with people, demonstrating things in a way other people will understand, and more.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Speech Communications with an emphasis in Theater and a minor in Business. I also have a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I have taught communication classes in public high schools and various home school groups over the last 20 years. I have also owned a theater and dance studio for 15 years.
Students will need to have a spiral notebook to take notes on during class. They will also need a quiet room with good lighting on the days they give their speeches.
We will be watching, reading, or listening to clips of famous speeches by authors such as Martin Luther King, Jr., President John F. Kennedy, President Ronald Reagan, Queen Elizabeth, etc.
I'm so excited to be teaching Speech Communication, Non-Verbal/Small Group Communications, and a variety of theater classes! I taught speech and small group communications in a public high school and for different home school co-ops throughout...
