High School Literature Year 2, Semester 2: Novel Study & ELA Book Club for Teen

What's included

17 live meetings
14 hrs 10 mins in-class hours
Homework
2-4 hours per week. Learners will be asked to read roughly 1/4 of a novel per week. Exact page numbers will depend on the novel.
Letter Grade
If students submit an essay or a project, I will provide a rubric with a final letter grade, as well as comments within the essay or project itself.
Progress Report
I am always available and happy to work with caregivers to ensure that their learner's specific needs are met. If you wish to touch base with me about your learner, or discuss something in particular, don't hesitate to reach out and I will provide feedback.
Certificate of Completion
At the end of the semester, learners can request a final grade report. Learners must be enrolled in the class for at least four novels (two units), and must have submitted at least two essays and/or projects to qualify. I am unable to accurately assess a student's performance otherwise. Grades will be an average of: class participation, in-class writing, and essay/project grades, weighted evenly. Grade reports will include a written report as well as letter/number grades.

Welcome to the second semester of High School Literature Year 2! This course invites homeschool learners to delve deeper into classic literature, building on previous knowledge in a supportive and engaging setting. 

Through thematic exploration, in-depth discussions, and structured guidance, learners will continue to enhance their appreciation and understanding of timeless novels.

This semester is organized into two thematic units, each featuring two novels. Learners will spend four weeks on each novel, providing ample time for in-depth study of themes, symbolism, and literary techniques. 

Engaging discussions, collaborative tasks, and analytic writing are at the heart of each class, supported by direct instruction to help learners tackle complex material. Each class, learners work to strengthen their communication and critical thinking skills.

Warm-Up Discussion (~10 minutes): Share initial thoughts on the reading.
Collaborative or Writing Task (~15 minutes): Respond to prompts for deeper insight.
Analytic Discussion (~20 minutes): Join group discussions exploring themes and perspectives.
Sign-Off (~5 minutes): Reflect on the session or make predictions.

Weekly materials support critical thinking, and each unit offers an optional graded essay or project, with feedback and letter grades provided for those seeking more detailed assessment. Assignments are managed through Google Drive.

No prior knowledge is needed, though learners should be comfortable with reading high school-level novels over four weeks. Learners are welcome to take the semester courses in any order. No pre-requisites required.

Classic literature often includes mature themes. I encourage families to review the readings for suitability. I maintain a respectful, judgment-free space for open discussion, and parents are encouraged to review each book’s content.

Meg Connolly holds bachelor’s degrees in literature and philosophy, as well as master’s degrees in teaching ELA (grades 7-12) and in teaching students with disabilities. With over 11 years of experience in both U.S. public schools and online settings, she has taught courses ranging from special education ELA to AP Literature.
