Class experience

US Grade 9 - 12

This class is taught in English.
Students will practice the following core ELA skills:
- Analyze the structure and genre of a text, and how this contributes to how the author expresses tone, themes, and overall meaning
- Understand the order of events in a text and speculate about events that may have occurred before and after the events of the text
- Use textual evidence to support analysis of the text's meaning
- Interpret the meaning of advanced vocabulary, historical slang and phrases, symbolism, external references, and other elements of literature
I am a professional writer and editor for academic and creative writing. I have a Masters degree in Historical Musicology with a focus on interpretation of historical texts, specifically from the Medieval and Renaissance periods. I also have Doctoral certifications in Latin and Ancient Greek which I have put to use working in rare book libraries as a translator and interpreter of ancient literature, as well as later European and American literature.
Homework Offered
Required Homework Students will be able to find a copy of the next week's reading in the Classroom as a PDF, and students are expected to complete the reading prior to our class meeting. In addition to a copy of the reading, I will also provide discussion questions that act as a reading companion. Optional Homework Students may write their responses to reading comprehension and analysis questions and submit them for me to review and provide notes.

Parental Guidance: Literature, especially advanced literature, is written by adults, generally for adults, and often contains mature themes. Please use your own discretion in determining if your learner is mature enough to handle the content of each piece of literature specifically. I will update the list below with information on what literature we will read each class, if it has sensitive content, and if so, what that sensitive content is.
