Mastering fundamental grammar skills doesn't have to be intimidating. After years of studying and teaching English Language Arts, I have developed a specialized curriculum to help older students acquire the foundational skills they need to become good writers. In this course, we will work to make grammar fun by incorporating games, small and large group practice, and independent practice into our lessons. I have written a workbook for this course that is specifically tailored for online high school learners. The lessons are somewhat "easy" in the beginning: we will review and expound upon topics such as nouns, verbs, and basic sentence structure. As the curriculum progresses, the courses will become more complex and advanced, but don't worry! We're in this together! The best way to learn grammar is to practice, practice, practice. Handouts, worksheets, and notes will be posted in the Outschool classroom each week. Printing is not required; however, it is strongly encouraged. Students who choose not to print may download the materials and follow along by taking notes on blank notebook paper. !CHALLENGE! classes will be every fourth class, and they will consist of games, races, and other fun activities that review the previous content. We will use websites such as Quizlet and Socrative to keep score and record progress. Parents will receive two progress reports and one final report card over the course time. Students will not be given daily homework; however, quizzes, tests, and studying will be completed outside of class. Most quizzes are very short and will give students a good idea of how well they are understanding the material. We will discuss the correct answers to the quizzes and tests in class together so that students can ask questions and hear explanations for each answer.
Learning Goals
Students will develop an advanced understanding of the fundamentals of English grammar. Students will learn parts of speech, sentence formation, punctuation, and common word usage.
