I believe Geometry must be taught in an interactive manner. The overall goal of Geometry is to build deductive reasoning and logic and to achieve this the student needs to be challenged to build mathematical arguments to support their work. My class is structured to do this. I will provide formatted notes and homework for each lesson. The students should be prepared with basic construction tools, ruler, compass and protractor and paper for constructions for each class. I am available outside of the scheduled class time to address student questions. This is my intended syllabus for the second semester. Please understand that I will adjust my pace to complement each cohort of students. The dates coincide with a start date after January 8th. Sections beginning before or after this week, the dates will be adjusted according to the starting date of the first class. Please reference each section for a complete schedule. Weeks one and two - Similarity - In this unit we will begin with a review of rates and proportions. We will apply these concepts to polygons and triangles to prove similarity. And use the principles of similarity proportional relationships to solve problems. We will conclude the unit with a look at scale and dilations. Weeks three and four - Right Triangles and Trigonometry -In this unit we will learn three trigonometric ratios commonly used to find the relationships of angles and the lengths of sides in right triangles, we will use these ratios and the Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems and will learn steps used to decide when to use the Law of Sines and when to use the Law of Cosines to solve a problem. Weeks five and six - Extending Perimeter, Area and Circumference -For these two weeks we will learn to develop geometric formulas for calculating the perimeter, circumference, and area of a variety of shapes and composite figures. We will also explore the effects of changing the proportions of figures and conclude with geometric probability. Weeks seven and eight - Spatial Reasoning -We will learn about three-dimensional figures and special relationships. We will also use formulas for three-dimensional figures and make conjectures about the relationships between the vertices, edges, and faces of a polyhedron. Weeks nine, ten and eleven - Circles - In this unit, we will learn about circles. In particular, we will look at the lines, segments, and angles found inside and outside of circles and review the lines and segments that intersect circles. Weeks twelve, thirteen and fourteen - Extending Transformational Geometry - To complete our study, we will learn more about transformational geometry; congruence transformations, such as reflections, translations, and rotations, and will also learn about geometric patterns such as symmetry and tessellations.
Learning Goals
The students will:
- use geometry definitions, thereoms and postulates to build mathematical arguements
- use constructions to support definitions, postulates and theorems
- use lines, polygons and circles as structures to build deductive reasoning
