I believe Geometry must be taught in an interactive manner. The overall goal of Geometry is to build deductive reasoning and logic and to achieve this the student needs to be challenged to build mathematical arguments to support their work. My class is structured to do this. I will provide formatted notes and homework for each lesson. The students should be prepared with basic construction tools, ruler, compass and protractor and paper for constructions for each class. I am available outside of the scheduled class time to address student questions. This is my intended syllabus for the first semester; I offer a second semester class as well that will be scheduled to begin after each section ends. Please understand that I will adjust my pace to complement each cohort of students. The dates coincide with a start date after Labor Day (September 4th, 2023). Sections beginning before or after this week, the dates will be adjusted according to the starting date of the first class. Please reference each section for a complete schedule. Weeks One and Two – Foundations of Geometry, Week 1, September 3 – 9: Euclidean and Construction Tools, -Define, measure and construct points, lines, planes, and angles Week 2, September 10 - 17: Coordinate and Transformation Tools- Geometric formulas and transformations in the coordinate plane. Weeks Three and Four – Geometric Reasoning Week 3, September 18 - 23: Inductive and Deductive Reasoning - Using inductive reasoning to make conjectures and deductive reasoning to verify conjectures, conditional statements. Week 4, September 24 - 30; Mathematical Proof - Algebraic, geometric and flowchart proof; intro to Symbolic Logic Weeks Five, Six and Seven – Parallel and Perpendicular Lines - Lines with transversals - Coordinate Geometry Weeks Eight, Nine and Ten – Triangle Congruence - Triangles and congruence - Proving triangle congruence Weeks Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen– Properties and Attributes of Triangles - Segments in triangles - Relationships with triangles Weeks Fourteen, Fifteen and Sixteen– Polygons and Quadrilaterals - Polygons and parallelograms - Other quadrilaterals
Learning Goals
The students will:
- use geometry definitions, theorems and postulates to build mathematical arguments
- use constructions to support definitions, postulates, and theorems
- use lines, polygons and circles as structures to build deductive reasoning
