Beginner Level
Class Experience In this 16-week course, students will learn the science behind forensics and the techniques used to solve crimes. This science has sensitive information about crimes, death, and the process of dying; please consult with your child prior to enrolling. If ready to dive into this type of science, then enroll. It is a high school-level course that will be considered a half-semester credit. Students will be given reading assignments, videos, worksheets. Upon completion, students will receive a printable certificate for their files. Students will learn the science of forensics using various online videos, worksheets, and coloring pages. I will do oral reviews if time allows in each of the classes.
Learning Goals
My goal is to equip students to know what it takes to be a forensic scientist.
Make them aware of career choices in this field.

Parental Guidance
A few points to consider:
-Being that forensics is sensitive, all that death entails will be mentioned. I would recommend this be for students aged thirteen and above.
-Students will be using vinegar which is a mild acid. Students may need to be careful and wear protective eyewear.
-Also, we will be using super glue. It must be handled carefully so as not to cause any skin irritations.
Students will view YouTube videos that deal with this topic. One video contains information about body farms.
Pre-Requisites
Students must be able to read at an 8th grade level and work independently.
Supply List
Supplies: Gloves (protect their hands and also to let them experience what it is like to work with gloves constantly in this field) Superglue (used to reveal fingerprints) 4 x4 pieces of aluminum foil (containing the superglue) Plastic-enclosed shoebox (airtight for the experiment to work) Small 4 x 6 frame with glass (lift and observe fingerprints) magnifying glass (make close observations) Wide clear tape Sandpaper or Emory board (file your nails with) Soft makeup brush Pencil Crayons Playdoh Ruler or Caliper (measuring different items in various experiments) 2 empty medium size jars (available for doing experiments) 5 different species of leaves (specimens needed for observational study) 5 different types of seeds (specimens needed for observational study) 3 different types of soils (specimens needed for observational study) 3 fabric samples (specimens needed for observational study) 6 small white or clear water bottle caps or vials red cabbage (used as a pH indicator; must be boiled prior to doing the lab) baking soda (a mild base needed for pH test) vinegar (a mild acid needed for pH test) milk (ingredient needed to test for pH) soda (ingredient needed to test for pH) milk of magnesia (ingredient needed to test for pH) water (ingredient needed to test for pH) salt sugar 1 wide-mouth jar coffee filter paper two black felt pens Chicken leg bone (observational study of vinegar or heat on the bone) Raw hotdog (observational study of rotting meat)
