Beginner Level
Environmental Science is an elective high school science course. It explores the interactions between humans and Earth's environment, and the science concepts needed to understand and critically think about environmental issues. Our class format will primarily be lectures but students will be given opportunities to share thoughts and ideas as well as asking questions. Grades will be offered upon request. The grades will be a combination of weekly assessment scores and class participation.

Week 1Lesson 1Dynamic EarthThe different earth systems that make up our planet will be explored.Week 2Lesson 2Diversity and BiomesEarth's biosphere, biodiversity and biomes will be taught.Week 3Lesson 3How does energy flow?We will learn about food webs, food chains, and energy pyramids.Week 4Lesson 4Aquatic and Terrestrial EcosystemsWhat different kinds of ecosystems make up our planet?Week 5Lesson 5Cycling of MatterThe carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycles will be explored.Week 6Lesson 6Population Dynamics and Species InteractionsHow do populations of organisms influence entire ecosystems?Week 7Lesson 7Human Populations and TrendsThis lesson focuses on the trends seen in human population growth across different cultures.Week 8Lesson 8Water Resources, Water Use and ManagementWe will learn about one of Earth's most important resources and its management.Week 9Lesson 9Pollution: Water, Air, Noise and LightThis week we will learn about the implications of living in a polluted environment.Week 10Lesson 10Climate and Climate ChangeWhat is climate change? We will learn about the causes of climate change along with ways to help prevent it.Week 11Lesson 11Land Management and Conservation, Food and AgricultureLand development conservation and food growth will be explored this week.Week 12Lesson 12Resources: Minerals, Nonrenewable, and RenewableWe will learn about the energy required for mining minerals and different kinds of nonrenewable and renewable resources.Week 13Lesson 13Threats to Our PlanetWe will review the different threats that are posed to our planet and the solutions that are in place to help prevent them.
