This high school-level class will cover short stories, poetry, and literature (both classic and modern). There will also be essay writing. It is a MUST that students already know how to write the following essays: book report, opinion piece, compare/contrast, and persuasive. We will briefly recap how to write each of these, but we will not go in-depth. This course will have practices and activities (such as quizzes, matching, drag-and-drop, etc.) to check the student's understanding. These will be done through NearPod and Blooket (neither requires a personal account). 2024 Fall Semester: Aug 26 - Oct 25: "1984" Unit Oct 28 - Nov 22: "Of Mice and Men" Unit ****NOVEMBER 25-29: NO CLASS**** Dec 2-20: "A Midsummer Night's Dream" Unit ****DECEMBER 23 - JANUARY 10: NO CLASS**** Jan 13-March 13: "The Odyssey" Unit ****DEC 23 - JAN 10: NO CLASS**** 2023 Fall Semester: Aug 21-24: "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan Aug 28-31: Poetry Elements Sep 4-7: Lord of the Flies Chapter 1 Sep 11-14: Lord of the Flies chapters 2-3 Sep 18-21: Lord of the Flies chapters 4-5 Sep 25-28: NO CLASS Oct 2-5: Lord of the Flies chapters 6-7 Oct 9-12: Lord of the Flies chapters 8-9 Oct 16-19: Lord of the Flies chapters 10-12 / Test and Analytical Essay Oct 23-26: Night chapters 1 Oct 30-Nov 2: Night chapters 3 & 4 Nov 6-9: Night chapters 5 & 6 Nov 13-16: Night chapters 7-9, History Tie-In Lesson Nov 20-21: Night Test & Essay ****NOVEMBER 20-24: NO CLASS**** Nov 27-30: Shakespeare Prereading / Romeo & Juliet Act 1 Dec 4-7: Romeo & Juliet Act 1 Dec 11-14: Romeo & Juliet Act 2 Dec 18-21: Romeo & Juliet Act 3 ****NO CLASS DECEMBER 25 - JANUARY 02**** Jan 3-4: Romeo & Juliet Act 4 Jan 8-11-: Romeo & Juliet Act 5 Jan 15-18: Romeo & Juliet Test & Essay / Fahrenheit 451 Pre-reading Activities and Journals Jan 22-Feb 1: Fahrenheit 451 Part 1 Feb 5-8: Fahrenheit 451 Part 2 Feb 12-22: Fahrenheit 451 Part 3 ****FEBRUARY 26-29: NO CLASS**** March 4-7: Pre-reading for Animal Farm & Chapter 1 March 11-14: Animal Farm Chapters 2-3 March 18-21: Animal Farm Chapters 4-5 March 25-28: Animal Farm Chapters 6-7 April 1-4: Animal Farm Chapters 8-9 April 8-11: Animal Farm Chapter 10 & Post-reading *****April 15 - May 30: Short Story Unit ("The Outcasts of Poker Flat", "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber", "Babylon Revisited", & "The Yellow Wallpaper")****

Teacher expertise and credentials
I went to school for a teaching degree with a major in English and a minor in science. I later went back to add on a history degree. Throughout the years in brick and mortar schools, I taught high school English (general, pre-AP, and at-risk), AP American history, AP world history, chemistry, AP biology, pre-AP anatomy, middle school Earth and life sciences, and IPC.
I was also a scout troop leader for nearly a decade where I taught life skills and made several themed book camps for the scouts. I love to dive into book series with students to promote a love of reading and understanding. I was that kid that waited outside of Barnes and Noble for it to open at midnight on the Tuesday release days of each Harry Potter book (after I read the first one). My goal is to not only get students to want to continue reading the following books in the series I teach, but to have them take a closer look into them and learn about different literary devices. I also have a love of history and always seek multiple views of historic events. Science fascinates me with its ever evolving discoveries. I love when my students get excited to learn more about a subject.
