US Grade 9 - 12
This is a semester-long course covering some of the most important topics in earth science. We'll examine our home, Earth, and examine our place within our solar system, and our galaxy. There is no prerequisite for this course. This is set up in a block style to allow us to cover a year's worth of material in one semester. Please let me know if your student needs a grade. We will review material, and students will have an opportunity to see how well they're doing, but I don't assign grades unless it is requested. Week 1: Minerals - How do they form? How do we ID them? How do we use them? Week 2: Rocks - Rock cycles, types of rocks Week 3: Plate tectonics Week 4: Volcanoes, faults Week 5: weathering, soil Week 6: Review Week 7: Earth's History Week 8: The atmosphere & climate Week 9: Oceans Week 10: Astronomy Week 11: The Solar System Week 12: Review It's possible that we may cover more material. It depends on the class and how quickly we move the subject matter. I always do my best to end class when class is supposed to end. This class will mainly consist of lectures, but students will be able to have discussions and ask questions when they want or need to. I like to use Quizziz during class. Students are able to follow along on their device, and can privately answer questions so I can see who is following along. Participation is encouraged, but I understand not all students like speaking in class. Office Hours: I'm available if students need extra help. I'm available for tutoring if students need an extending amount of help each week. I don't mind meeting for a few minutes to help clear up concepts or answer questions a student didn't get to ask during class. Sometimes I can stay late after class, but I may need to schedule a separate time.
Learning Goals
Students will develop an understanding of the planet we call home, Earth. They will be able to apply scientific methods to discover new perspectives on Earth.
