Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
This is a flex course covering some of the most important topics in earth science. We'll examine our home, Earth, and examine our place within our solar system, and our galaxy. There is no prerequisite for this course.

Please let me know if your student needs a grade. We will review material, and students will have an opportunity to see how well they're doing, but I don't assign grades unless it is requested.

Week 1: Minerals - How do they form? How do we ID them? How do we use them?
Week 2: Rocks - Rock cycles, types of rocks
Week 3: Plate tectonics
Week 4: Volcanoes
Week 5: weathering, soil
Week 6: Earth's History
Week 7: The atmosphere & climate
Week 8: Oceans
Week 9: Astronomy
Week 10: The Solar System

This course will include video lectures that the students can watch on their own time. Each week, they will have assignments to check their understanding. They will need to participate in the weekly Quizziz to help solidify their understanding. I will also be available once a week for office hours. I will need you to let me know if you plan on attending. I will check in with the class each week through the classroom. Students will be able to schedule office hours with me if they feel like they need extra help. I am also always available for tutoring.

While the lectures are prerecording, the students will be able to follow along using Quizziz and answer questions during the lesson to check to see if they understand the material or if they need to go back and review.

Students will be able to interact with the teacher and other classmates by participating in the weekly discussion in the classroom. Each week, there will be a discussion topic where students can share their ideas/opinions on a topic related to what we learned that week.

Assessments: There will be two informal assessments. If the student or parents requires a grade, please let me know. In addition to these assessments, there will be several mini-quizzes or assessments to check student's understanding. Students will at times, be able to help design questions for their peers as well.

A book is not required, but may be beneficial to the student. Textbooks can be expensive so I would advise looking for an older edition or a free online edition. It just needs to cover the topics listed in this course. If you have questions about a book you want to buy, please message me. I would be more than happy to help you.
Learning Goals
Students will have a good understanding of earth science. They will have a better appreciation of our home.
