In this in-depth and interactive class, we will cover the first semester of high school Biology. Classes will be lecture style with a strong emphasis on student discussions and questions. Students will be encouraged to ask questions and relate the material covered to the world around them. Students will be encouraged to read the material before coming to class. Week 1Lesson 1What is Biology: Part 1Themes and trends in biology will be discussed.Lesson 2The Chemistry of LifeIn this class the structure of atoms will be introduced and we will learn about covalent and ionic bonds.Week 2Lesson 3The Chemistry of Life: Part 2In this class we will discuss the unique chemistry of water.Lesson 4BiomoleculesThe structure and function of the four biomolecules will be introduced.Week 3Lesson 5Biomolecules Part 2We will continue our study of the four biomolecules and learn about monomers, polymers, and enzymes.Lesson 6Cell Structures and OrganellesEukaryotic cell organelles will be introduced.Week 4Lesson 7Cell Structures and MembranesWe will review the workings of the eukaryotic cell and learn about their membrane structure.Lesson 8Membrane TransportIn this class we will learn how cells transport molecules across their membranes. We will cover diffusion, osmosis and active transport.Week 5Lesson 9Cell Cycle and Mitosis Part 1The cell cycle will be introduced and we will begin to go over the steps of cellular division.Lesson 10Cell Cycle and Mitosis Part 2We will continue our study of the phases of mitosis.Week 6Lesson 11Introduction to PhotosynthesisIn this class we will learn the structure of plant cells, the overall chemical reaction of photosynthesis and the light dependent reactions.Lesson 12Photosynthesis Part 2In this class we will learn about the Calvin Cycle.Week 7Lesson 13Cellular RespirationIn this class we will begin our study of how cells break down glucose and convert the energy in glucose into ATP.Lesson 14Cellular Respiration Part 2We will learn about how cells make ATP in the absence of oxygen.Week 8Lesson 15MendelWe will learn about Gregor Mendel and his Law of Segregation.Lesson 16Mendel and Inheritance Patterns Part 2We will learn about Mendel's second law as well as other patterns of inheritance such as co-dominance and incomplete dominance.Week 9Lesson 17Punnett SquaresWe will learn how to predict patterns of inheritance using Punnett Squares.Lesson 18MeiosisMeiosis, it's purpose and the details of its first phase will be introduced.Week 10Lesson 19Meiosis Part 2We will review Meiosis 1 and learn about Meiosis II.Lesson 20DNA DiscoveryWe will learn about the experiments that led to discovery that DNA was the genetic material.Week 11Lesson 21DNA Structure and ReplicationIn this class we will learn about the structure of DNA and how DNA is replicated.Lesson 22RNA: TranscriptionIn this class we will learn about RNA and how it is used to help cells express genes.Week 12Lesson 23TranslationIn this class we will learn how gene expression is tied to protein synthesis.Lesson 24Gene Regulation: ProkaryotesWe will learn how prokaryotic genes are regulated using the classic example, The Lac OperonWeek 13Lesson 25Gene Regulation: EukaryotesThe use of transcription factors by eukaryotic cells to control gene expression will be discussed.Lesson 26DNA TechnologyPCR, DNA replication, cloning will be introduced.Week 14Lesson 27DNA TechnologyWe will continue to learn about DNA technology.Lesson 28Semester ReviewReview.
- In this course students will gain a deep understanding of Biology and how the living world operates. Students will become proficient in concepts covered in a standard high school biology course.
I have a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology and have been teaching high school Biology at the standard, honors and AP level for over ten years

Homework will be assigned weekly and I will provide detailed comments to help students deepen their understanding of the weekly material. At home labs will also be assigned and optional.
