In this in-depth and interactive class, we will cover the first semester of high school Biology. Starting with the atom and building up to the cell, students will gain a deeper understanding of the living world around them.

What is Biology: Part 1
Themes and trends in biology will be discussed.
Lesson 2
The Chemistry of Life
In this class the structure of atoms will be introduced and we will learn about covalent and ionic bonds.
 Week 2
Lesson 3
The Chemistry of Life: Part 2
In this class we will discuss the unique chemistry of water.
Lesson 4
Biomolecules
The structure and function of the four biomolecules will be introduced.
 Week 3
Lesson 5
Biomolecules Part 2
We will continue our study of the four biomolecules and learn about monomers, polymers, and enzymes.
Lesson 6
Cell Structures and Organelles
Eukaryotic cell organelles will be introduced.
 Week 4
Lesson 7
Cell Structures and Membranes
We will review the workings of the eukaryotic cell and learn about their membrane structure.
Lesson 8
Membrane Transport
In this class we will learn how cells transport molecules across their membranes. We will cover diffusion, osmosis and active transport.
 Week 5
Lesson 9
Cell Cycle and Mitosis Part 1
The cell cycle will be introduced and we will begin to go over the steps of cellular division.

Cell Cycle and Mitosis Part 2
We will continue our study of the phases of mitosis.
 Week 6
Lesson 11
Introduction to Photosynthesis
In this class we will learn the structure of plant cells, the overall chemical reaction of photosynthesis and the light dependent reactions.

Photosynthesis Part 2
In this class we will learn about the Calvin Cycle.
 Week 7
Lesson 13
Cellular Respiration
In this class we will begin our study of how cells break down glucose and convert the energy in glucose into ATP.
Lesson 14
Cellular Respiration Part 2
We will learn about how cells make ATP in the absence of oxygen.
 Week 8
Lesson 15
Mendel
We will learn about Gregor Mendel and his Law of Segregation.
Lesson 16
Mendel and Inheritance Patterns Part 2
We will learn about Mendel's second law as well as other patterns of inheritance such as co-dominance and incomplete dominance.
 Week 9
Lesson 17
Punnett Squares
We will learn how to predict patterns of inheritance using Punnett Squares.
Lesson 18
Meiosis
Meiosis, it's purpose and the details of its first phase will be introduced.
 Week 10
Lesson 19
Meiosis Part 2
We will review Meiosis 1 and learn about Meiosis II.
Lesson 20
DNA Discovery
We will learn about the experiments that led to discovery that DNA was the genetic material.
 Week 11
Lesson 21
DNA Structure and Replication
In this class we will learn about the structure of DNA and how DNA is replicated.
Lesson 22
RNA: Transcription
In this class we will learn about RNA and how it is used to help cells express genes.

Translation
In this class we will learn how gene expression is tied to protein synthesis.

Gene Regulation: Prokaryotes
We will learn how prokaryotic genes are regulated using the classic example, The Lac Operon

Lesson 25
Gene Regulation: Eukaryotes
The use of transcription factors by eukaryotic cells to control gene expression will be discussed.

DNA Technology
PCR, DNA replication, cloning will be introduced.

We will continue to learn about DNA technology.

  • In this course students will gain a deep understanding of Biology and how the living world operates. Students will become proficient in concepts covered in a standard high school biology course.
I have a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology and have been teaching high school Biology at the standard, honors and AP level for over ten years

Details: Homework will include reading to prepare for the class as well as thoughtful questions to help students review, process and master the material. Homework will be assigned weekly and I will provide detailed comments to help students deepen their understanding of the weekly material. At home labs will also be assigned and optional. All homework will be carefully reviewed and feedback will be provided.

Details: We will have fun in class Jeopardy style questions to review material. Formal quizzes will be available and optional.
