This 8‑week course meets twice weekly and delves into core biological processes, from the principles of cellular energetics and enzyme‑driven energy transfer to the molecular mechanisms of gene expression and the patterns of heredity.

This overview shows how substances move into, out of, and within cells. You’ll see three major categories—passive transport (no energy required), active transport (energy‑dependent), and vesicular transport (bulk movement via membrane‑bound vesicles).

Enzymes are biological catalysts—typically proteins—that accelerate chemical reactions by lowering the activation energy required, without being consumed in the process.

Cellular metabolism encompasses the integrated network of biochemical reactions—catabolic pathways that break down nutrients to release energy and anabolic pathways that use this energy to synthesize macromolecules—that enable cells to grow, reproduce, and maintain their structures and functions.

Glycolysis is a ten‑step metabolic pathway in the cytosol that converts one molecule of glucose into two molecules of pyruvate, generating a net gain of two ATP and two NADH without requiring oxygen

Cellular Respiration: Glycolysis and Pyruvate Oxidation 

The Krebs cycle (citric acid cycle) is the central hub of aerobic metabolism. It oxidizes acetyl‑CoA to CO₂ while capturing high‑energy electrons in NADH and FADH₂ and generates one GTP (or ATP) per turn to drive cellular energy production.

Cellular Respiration: Krebs’ Cycle 

Oxidative phosphorylation is the process by which cells harness the energy released from electrons transferred through a series of membrane‑bound protein complexes to generate ATP via a proton‑driven rotary ATP synthase. This occurs in the inner mitochondrial membrane of eukaryotes (or the plasma membrane of prokaryotes) and couples electron transport to ATP production through chemiosmotic coupling.

Cellular Respiration: Oxidative phosphorylation 

The cell cycle is an ordered series of events—interphase (G₁, S, G₂) and the mitotic (M) phase—in which a cell grows, duplicates its DNA, and prepares for division into two genetically identical daughter cells. 

Mitosis, the M phase of the cycle, proceeds through prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase to ensure equal segregation of condensed chromosomes before cytokinesis completes cell division.

CELL REPRODUCTION AND DIVISION 

Meiosis is a specialized two‑stage cell division process that reduces the chromosome number by half—producing four genetically distinct haploid gametes from one diploid parent cell—through one round of DNA replication followed by two consecutive divisions (meiosis I and II) . 

Meiosis 

DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid and serves as the primary repository of genetic information in cells. 

DNA replication is semiconservative: each parental strand serves as a template for a new complementary strand, yielding two daughter helices each composed of one “old” and one newly synthesized strand.

RNA (ribonucleic acid) is a single‑stranded nucleic acid polymer that conveys genetic information and catalyzes biological reactions.

Transcription is the synthesis of an RNA strand from a DNA template.

Translation is the ribosome‑mediated decoding of mRNA codons into a polypeptide chain.

MOLECULAR GENETICS 

Cell communication (or cell signaling) is the process by which cells recognize, receive, and respond to external cues via specific receptors, such as chemical ligands, electrical impulses, or light. 

This enables coordination of activities within multicellular organisms and adaptation in unicellular life forms.

Cell Communication and Signal Transduction 

Gene regulation is how cells control the timing, location, and amount of gene product (RNA or protein) they produce. 

It enables cells to “turn on” or “turn off” specific genes, or modulate their expression levels, in response to developmental signals or environmental change.

Gene Regulation and Mutation 

A mutation is any permanent change in the DNA sequence of a cell’s genome. Mutations may occur during DNA replication or be induced by environmental mutagens such as UV light, chemicals, or radiation.

Mendel's Laws of Genetics describe the basic principles of heredity, including the Law of Segregation, the Law of Independent Assortment, and the Law of Dominance. These laws, established through Mendel's experiments with pea plants, explain how traits are passed down from parents to offspring.

Non-Mendelian genetics refers to inheritance patterns that deviate from the simple, two-allele, dominant/recessive model proposed by Mendel. These patterns involve more complex interactions between alleles, the effects of multiple genes, or environmental factors, resulting in a wider range of phenotypes.
