Use SHIROEARLYBIRD250* Children are born with an innate curiosity that questions everything about our natural world. What are things made out of? Where did it come from? Why is it like this? How does it work? Problem-based learning seeks to capitalize on student's natural curiosity and hunger to solve problems and explore. Instead of the traditional lecture as a primary mode of information transfer, problem-based learning frames learning with a problem or a story. Students then acquire and learn science along the way to help them solve the problem. This problem-based hands-on learning course is a yearlong curriculum that corresponds to a typical freshman biology course. Students will learn biology through the lens of the forensic case of a fictitious woman who passes away. As students go along, they will learn about the various heath conditions the woman has along with the biology behind the conditions. For example, students will learn that this woman has diabetes and in the process will learn about the types of diabetes, nutrition, macromolecules, calories and calorimetry, the cell organelles, and the connection between insulin and glucose. The students will put what they learn to the test in the final unit to fit together what actually happened to the victim. Students will be assessed through end-of-unit summative tests (optional). This self-paced course also includes one live Q&A tutoring session and email correspondence to check in with the instructor. Upon completion of the course, students will receive a certificate with their grade reported on it that can be used for transcript purposes. To reduce the amount of screen time, students will receive an e-copy of the handouts that need to be printed. There are no pre-recorded lectures in this course. Instead, students will read and work through the student packet which gives an explanation of everything the student will need to learn and do. This unit also comes with labs that can be done at home with chemicals that can be found at home or ordered through Amazon (materials not included at this moment) or through online simulations or the unit media slides also provided.
