Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
16 lessons//8 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Review of Combining Like Terms and the Distributive Property.
In this 50 minute class, we will review the essential concepts of pre-algebra. Mainly, the distributive property and collecting like terms. I start with the basic level of distribution and collecting like terms and finish simplifying expressions at different levels of complexity. Note that the first class is a review of topics.
Lesson 2
Graphing Ordered Pairs and Naming Graphs.
In this 50 minute class, the first 20 minutes will be used in explaining concepts and working detailed examples for students. The resultant 30 minutes will be used for students to practice exercises. Immediate feedback will be given along with explanations and or corrections. Students will graph points on the coordinate plane. ( the x and y axis) The naming of graphs will be introduced, an important skill which will be useful in future algebra classes.
 Week 2
Lesson 3
Relations , Mapping and Definition of a Function.
In this 50 minute class, the first 20 minutes will be used in explaining concepts and working detailed examples for students. The resultant 30 minutes will be used for students to practice exercises. Immediate feedback will be given along with explanations and or corrections. Students will learn to distinguish relations and functions. How to tell if a relation is or is not a function. Additionally, they will learn to map relations.
Lesson 4
Introduction to Slope, positive, negative, zero. Graphing basic Inequalities.
In this 50 minute class, the first 20 minutes will be used in explaining concepts and working detailed examples for students. The resultant 30 minutes will be used for students to practice exercises. Students will learn the concept of slope, negative , positive, zero or no slope. This skill is essential and useful skill in future algebra classes. (Unfortunately, most schools overlook or spend a negligible amount of time on this topic, MUCH to the detriment of the student.)
 Week 3
Lesson 5
Determining Slope from a Graph.
In this 50 minute class, the first 20 minutes will be used in explaining concepts and working detailed examples for students. The resultant 30 minutes will be used for students to practice exercises. Immediate feedback will be given along with explanations and or corrections. Since this is a fairly easy class , students will have ample opportunity to work out examples and master this skill. Determining slope from a given graph is a topic appearing in the SAT exam.
Lesson 6
Graphing Using the Slope - Y Intercept Method
In this 50 minute class, the first 20 minutes will be used in explaining concepts and working detailed examples for students. The resultant 30 minutes will be used for students to practice exercises. Immediate feedback will be given along with explanations and or corrections. Since this is a fairly easy class , students will have ample opportunity to work out examples and master this skill. This graphing method is the easiest and fastest way to graph linear equations.
 Week 4
Lesson 7
Graphing Using the X-Intercept , Y intercept Method.
This graphing method is employed in future applications in more advanced algebra classes.
Lesson 8
Finding the Slope from an Equation. Changing Standard Form to Slope-Y Intercept.
In this 50 minute class, the first 20 minutes will be used in explaining concepts and working detailed examples for students. The resultant 30 minutes will be used for students to practice exercises. This class offers the opportunity to take a break from graphing and focus on recognizing different components of linear equations and their meaning. Manipulation of algebraic equations will be introduced, a skill which lacks severe practice in the majority of schools, private or public.
 Week 5
Lesson 9
Writing Equations in Point Slope Form, when given two points.
In this 50 minute class, the first 20 minutes will be used in explaining concepts and working detailed examples for students. The resultant 30 minutes will be used for students to practice exercises. Immediate feedback will be given along with explanations and or corrections. Students will be taught how to calculate the slope of a line using the slope formula. Emphasis is placed on dealing with negative signs, a major stumbling block for many students.
Lesson 10
Writing Equations in Slope- Y intercept Form.
In this 50 minute class, the first 20 minutes will be used in explaining concepts and working detailed examples for students. The resultant 30 minutes will be used for students to practice exercises. Immediate feedback will be given along with explanations and or corrections. Students will put to practice the skills learned in the previous lesson and enhance their knowledge in the manipulation algebraic formulas. ( A skill seriously lacking in today's mathematical education mainly in the U.S.)
 Week 6
Lesson 11
Graphing Systems of Equations.
In this 50 minute class, the first 20 minutes will be used in explaining concepts and working detailed examples for students. The resultant 30 minutes will be used for students to practice exercises. Immediate feedback will be given along with explanations and or corrections. Students will put to practice skills learned in lesson 6; they will graph two lines on the same x-y axis and learn their meaning. The concept of one solution, two solutions and no solution will be taught and practiced.
Lesson 12
Graphing Systems of Inequalities.
In this 50 minute class, the first 20 minutes will be used in explaining concepts and working detailed examples for students. The resultant 30 minutes will be used for students to practice exercises. Immediate feedback will be given along with explanations and or corrections. The skills learned in lesson 11, will be put use in this lesson and will facilitate tremendously the mastery of this lesson.
 Week 7
Lesson 13
Introduction to the Substitution Method.
In this 50 minute class, the first 20 minutes will be used in explaining concepts and working detailed examples for students. The resultant 30 minutes will be used for students to practice exercises. Immediate feedback will be given along with explanations and corrections. The skills practiced in lessons 8, 9 and 10, will be used in order to facilitate the understanding of the substitution method. This method is an essential part of learning algebra and will grant the student success in Algebra.
Lesson 14
Substitution Method with Additional Manipulation.
In this 50 minute class, the first 20 minutes will be used in explaining concepts and working detailed examples for students. The resultant 30 minutes will be used for students to practice exercises. Immediate feedback will be given along with explanations and corrections. This lesson reinforces skills learned of lesson 13, and lessons 8,9 & 10. Manipulation of algebraic equations is given priority , a skill which lacks severe practice in the majority of schools, private or public.
 Week 8
Lesson 15
Introduction to the Elimination Method.
In this 50 minute class, the first 20 minutes will be used in explaining concepts and working detailed examples for students. The resultant 30 minutes will be used for students to practice exercises. Immediate feedback will be given along with explanations and corrections. Students will be introduced to the elimination method ; an algebraic (alternate form) form of solving systems of equations. Solving systems was introduced in lesson 11.
Lesson 16
The Elimination Method with Additional Manipulation.
In this 50 minute class, the first 20 minutes will be used in explaining concepts and working detailed examples for students. The resultant 30 minutes will be used for students to practice exercises. Immediate feedback will be given along with explanations and corrections. I will expand upon lesson 15, with further algebraic manipulation. An attempt (time permitting) will be made to connect lessons 11 and lessons 13 to 16, in order for the student to see the "Big Picture"
This class is taught in English.
  • Developmental Goals: The goal for this course is to provide in part the mathematical background necessary for college level mathematics courses. This course also seeks to promote the use and understanding of the language of algebra. Furthermore, this course seeks to enhance the student's ability to reason logically.
As a private tutor since 1995 I learned that students want a math teacher who is friendly, non-judgmental and is interested in their success in math.
Students want concise and simple explanations.

I have developed my own method of teaching this skill.
I have successfully taught this skill to hundreds of students .
Once you learn it you will never forget it.
After watching Khan Academy and You tube videos on this topic I have seen nothing like the method I teach.
This skill is essential in order to learn Algebra properly.
I provide quality instruction to your child, you will be glad you chose me as his/her math teacher.
