Class Experience

Class Experience
Concerning accommodations. (For students who have Math anxiety)

I set up the chat in the class for private. So students can answer questions in the chat and only I get to see the answers.I do not call on anyone to answer questions in front of the class, I simply write an exercise on the whiteboard and encourage all to answer via the chat, again in private and I give you private feedback. This lowers the anxiety level a ton. :)

Description:

Prerequisite: Students need to be fluent in :The four operations with positive and negative numbers.
Be able to plot points on the X and Y axis.
The use of the distributive property.
                                                                        Evaluating basic expressions.

NOTE : Students must have a reasonable amount of academic maturity to enroll.

NOTE: If no students show after the first 10 minutes of class, class is cancelled. No makeups,no refunds, no exceptions.

The way I teach this skill is very easy to learn and your child will be prepared for success in Algebra.
I will show students how to do an exercise on the white board. They will learn by actually doing example exercises during class. I will repeat with another exercise and will explain as many times as needed until the students are ready to do the exercises by themselves. Once started, I will check their answers for accuracy and follow up with any necessary explanations. I encourage all participants to try as many exercises as possible. I follow up the class with an upload of homework with the solutions.

Syllabus

16 Lessons
over 8 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Review of Combining Like Terms and the Distributive Property.
In this 50 minute class, we will review the essential concepts of pre-algebra.
Mainly, the distributive property and collecting like terms. I start with the basic level of distribution and collecting like terms and finish simplifying expressions at different levels of complexity.
Note that the first class is a review of topics.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Graphing Ordered Pairs and Naming Graphs.
In this 50 minute class, the first 20 minutes will be used in explaining concepts and working detailed examples for students.
The resultant 30 minutes will be used for students to practice exercises.
Immediate feedback will be given along with explanations and or corrections.
Students will graph points on the coordinate plane. ( the x and y axis)
The naming of graphs will be introduced, an important skill which will be useful in future algebra classes.

Lesson 3:
Relations , Mapping and Definition of a Function.
In this 50 minute class, the first 20 minutes will be used in explaining concepts and working detailed examples for students.
The resultant 30 minutes will be used for students to practice exercises.
Immediate feedback will be given along with explanations and or corrections.
Students will learn to distinguish relations and functions.
How to tell if a relation is or is not a function.
Additionally, they will learn to map relations.

Lesson 4:
Introduction to Slope, positive, negative, zero. Graphing basic Inequalities.
In this 50 minute class, the first 20 minutes will be used in explaining concepts and working detailed examples for students.
The resultant 30 minutes will be used for students to practice exercises.
Students will learn the concept of slope, negative , positive, zero or no slope. This skill is essential and useful skill in future algebra classes.
(Unfortunately, most schools overlook or spend a negligible amount of time on this topic, MUCH to the detriment of the student.)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from University of Houston
As a private tutor since 1995 I learned that students want a math teacher who is friendly, non-judgmental and is interested in their success in math.
Students want concise and simple explanations.

I have developed my own method of teaching this skill.
I have successfully taught this skill to hundreds of students .
Once you learn it you will never forget it.
After watching Khan Academy and You tube videos on this topic I have seen nothing like the method I teach.
This skill is essential in order to learn Algebra properly.
I provide quality instruction to your child, you will be glad you chose me as his/her math teacher.
