1 hour per week. Ideally, learners should play several games of chess with various opponents each week whlle taking this course. That way they'll be able to experiment with the tactics that we're going over in the sessions.Class Experience
Once you've thoroughly learned the fundamental rules of chess, how do you hone your skills - especially your ability to win material and attack and then checkmate your opponent's king? In this course - just like in my "Winning Chess Tactics and Patterns of Attack" class on Outschool - we'll explore ways of a making your pieces work together effectively. To help you master these ideas, we'll go through lots of actual situations that illustrate them. I'll set up a club at Chess.com where, if you wish, you can play games against opponents at your own level - games that we can go through as a group and learn from. If you want to launch more successful attacks - and defend yourself better against your opponent's threats - this is a course for you. In each session I'll introduce you to a new concept and then play through some games with you so that you can see how these things work in actual practice. Here's an overview of the topics we'll cover: First Session: discovered attack Second Session: double check Third Session: the overworked piece Fourth Session: no retreat in sight Fifth Session: removing the guard Sixth Session: breaking lines of communication Seventh Session: supporting the passed pawn Eighth Session: review of topics In every lesson I'll ask you to think through a number of positions and situations with me. This will improve you own ability to understand positions in your own games and determine the best moves to make. I look forward to working with you to improve your chess performance!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Years ago I was one of the top chess players in my high school; later on I also joined my university's chess team and competed in tournaments. When I taught at a high school, I sponsored the chess club there for thirty years, and the club's members regularly participated in local tournaments. After my retirement in 2016 I coached elementary school students and prepared them for tournaments in our area for three years.
