Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
It can be challenging to find reading material that is both interesting and accessible to older learners who are reading below grade level, particularly when you have a student with strong areas of interest but little reading material geared to those interests. On the first day of class, we will practice high-frequency words in isolation to fluency. The second and third days will be spent reading the same words in the context of phrases, sentences, and a high-interest story custom-written for your child! This course is taught by a published middle grade author and certified special education teacher who will tailor the sentences and passages to the needs and interests of each child.

This course will be customized for each student, but the basic outline will be:

Day One: Sparking interest and sight word reading

Day Two: Word and phrase practice

Day Three: Story time!

West Virginia Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello! I'm looking forward to providing your child with focused instruction in their areas of need! Please reach out so that we may work together to develop a tutoring plan that fits your child's needs as well as your budget and schedule.

I'm a certified teacher in the state of West Virginia with credentials in Elementary K - 6 General Education and Mild/Moderate Mental Impairments K - Adult Special Education. I've worked in the fields of education and applied behavior analysis for 20 years, most recently as a math teacher in grades 3 - 8 in a virtual charter school program. Prior to this assignment, I was the lead teacher in a program transitioning learners with autism from 1:1 behavior therapy to group academic instruction. I was also the lead staff in a tutoring program helping K - 6 students catch up to grade level in math and reading. I was fortunate to be able to attend Morningside Academy's Summer Institute in 2017, receiving training in Direct Instruction and Precision Teaching. For over a decade, I've worked with learners who use augmentative communication devices/speech-generating devices such as LAMP: Words for Life and Vantage Lite, and I'm comfortable teaching learners who use those modalities.

I'm the author of four middle grade novels, most recently FREE VERSE and ASHES TO ASHEVILLE (G.P. Putnam's Sons/Penguin Random House), and I spent six years teaching a weekly writing class for middle grade students at Cabell County Public Library in Huntington, WV. I volunteer at Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue, Inc., and I share my home with an elderly dog, a smattering of cats, and one delightful 14-year-old human!
