Description

Class Experience

Reading informational stories can be challenging for both children and adults, especially when they have no background understanding of the topic. For example, most people know what a dog or cat is and can apply basic knowledge when reading an informational story about the animals. A story about a salamander may prove more challenging because not everyone has seen or touched the amphibian. Five comprehension strategies comprise this class, which include questioning and creating mental images....

Students will leave class with a basic understanding of five strategies to use to help understand informational stories, especially when reading unfamiliar topics. These methods can be implemented immediately to enhance reading comprehension.

There is no homework.

Parents will receive an informal written assessment of their child's ability to apply the five strategies when reading and comprehending  informational stories.

30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
