Join a noble band of adventurers on a quest to save a nation, discover hidden treasure, and build their legend as the greatest heroes the land has ever known. Students work together to tell stories and solve problems in a collaborative environment. Although maps and dice will be used when necessary, and some combat will be included to add excitement or as a last resort to resolve conflict, adventures will focus on storytelling and developing characters. Students will also be given...
Students will exercise a variety of skills, including: - Teamwork - Problem solving - Empathy - Imagination Students will also be encouraged to practice summarizing and creative writing through weekly adventure journals.
I have managed chess clubs and role playing groups for more than a decade. I was a middle-school English teacher for a dozen years and have been working with kids in community groups, such as Scouts, for nearly twenty years.
Each week students will be asked to respond to a writing prompt. These will change each week, but will generally consist of: 1. A summary of the most important thing their character did in the adventure. 2. A description of what their character will do next. While these prompts are NOT required, students will receive in-game benefits (preference in turn order and dice roll bonuses) for replying to prompts.
2 files available upon enrollmentThis is an ongoing adventure for kids who already know some of the basics of role playing games. Students should be familiar with the D&D Basic Rules, which are available for free on the Wizards of the Coast website, numerous System Reference Document websites, or in the classroom. For players who are new to the game I recommend my "Building a Hero" introduction to creating a characters and playing roleplaying games. 🗺 I will use Roll20.net to display maps, but students are not required to use it to play. 📓 The storyline will be documented in the OutSchool classroom. 📜Students will post their adventure journals to OutSchool.
Students will receive verbal feedback and encouragement during each roleplay session. Students who participate in the writing prompts will receive praise, feedback on their writing, and in-game bonuses.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
D&D is a game which includes elements of fantasy magic and combat. While the focus of this class will be problem solving and creativity, students' characters may engage in combat against non-player characters. Stories will include magic and mythical creatures.
Students will use the Basic Rules System Reference Document for D&D. This PDF is available for free on the Wizards of the Coast website or in the classroom. Students who need help building a character may take my Building a Hero class or use this website to help them create a simple character: https://fastcharacter.com/
