Class Experience

Are you ready to embark on a quest of creativity and imagination like never before? Welcome to Heroes Journey, a thrilling adventure where young storytellers aged 12-16 can unleash their imagination and create stories of all kinds in a collaborative and immersive environment!

**Course Overview:**
Every young mind possesses the power to weave extraordinary tales. This class is designed to provide a platform for budding authors and roleplayers to explore their storytelling potential, building a sense of camaraderie while honing their creativity.

**Roleplay and Character Development:**
Step into the shoes of heroes, villains, and everything in between! The characters you create are up to you, from the type of being they are (human, animal, alien, etc) and what they look like to any special abilities, personality, backstory and more. The roleplay element allows participants to fully embody their characters, exploring their motivations, strengths, and weaknesses. Through these roleplaying experiences, students will practice empathy, emotional intelligence, and the art of crafting multi-dimensional characters.

**The Path of Collaboration:**
Heroes Journey fosters a collaborative atmosphere, where students come together to craft vibrant narratives. They will collectively build immersive worlds for their characters to explore, interacting with other students characters or telling their own story alongside the rest of the class.

**Open Format: Endless Possibilities:**
In Heroes Journey, there are no limits to storytelling possibilities. Whether it's a high-fantasy quest, a sci-fi adventure, a historical drama, or a mystery waiting to be solved, students can explore and experiment with various genres and themes, nurturing their unique storytelling voice.

**Unlocking Creative Expression:**
Heroes Journey empowers students to express their ideas and emotions freely. Through roleplaying different scenarios, they will develop their descriptive language, dialogue writing, and creative expression skills, transforming their visions into captivating stories.

**Class Details:**

The roleplay will happen in a Google Jamboard.
At the beginning of the Zoom call on class day, students will be given a link to a Google Jamboard.
After class the Jamboard can be turned into a pdf document and saved in the classroom as an archive of the stories.

New learners will be welcomed in and introduced to the current stories. They can choose to work on their character development during class or jump right in to role play and figure out their character as they go.

Students are not required to have their camera on for the entire class (only when they first come on so we can meet them).

The young storytellers are encouraged to talk but may also interact through the Zoom chat and collaboration board and choose not to speak. I am ok with students participating in the way they feel most comfortable.

Students are welcomed and encouraged to share their original stories and original artwork.

**Why Choose Heroes Journey:**

- A safe and inclusive environment that nurtures creativity and collaboration.
- Encourages teamwork, communication, and empathy through roleplaying.
- An open format that allows for diverse storytelling and genre exploration.
- Experienced instructor dedicated to fostering each student's unique storytelling voice.
- Builds confidence in creative writing and expression.

Come, young adventurers, and let your creativity soar in the Heroes Journey! Together, we'll embark on a quest that will leave a lasting impact on your storytelling journey.
Learning Goals
Students will naturally increase their story-telling abilities as we co-create stories about our characters.
Students often increase their typing abilities as we are typing the stories.
Students learn to work collaboratively to create stories together.
These are very social classes and many students form solid friendships within the classes over time.
Roleplay can be a good way (and safe space) to play through different kinds of situations and scenarios.

Parental Guidance
Based on my experience with children and storytelling, there will usually be some big conflicts their characters will need to overcome. There are often battle scenes and sometimes characters will die (it is always the choice of the student who controls the character whether their character gets hurt, how badly and if they die). I have also found that students in these classes like to make lots of different characters often playing with gender identities. Sometimes they create characters who have families and children. There are often characters who are the villains of the stories. This class uses approved 3rd party tools. I have a Google Classroom set up for each section as a place to distribute and receive back completed Character Bio Pages. In the classroom there is a fillable Google Doc template I've created for Character Bio Pages. There is a link posted in the Outschool classroom that will take you directly to the Google Classroom, no account or login necessary (use of Google Classroom is simply so the Google Doc can be filled out and returned easily). During class we will be using Google Jamboard as the tool to do our roleplay, again a link will be provided to students at the beginning of each class to access the Jamboard, no account or login necessary. Each student will have access to post on the Jamboard and after class each Jamboard will be converted into a pdf and saved to the Outschool classroom. (I've also included Nearpod in the list of 3rd party tools as this is where my classes have done role play in the past, I'm currently transitioning to Jamboard. If the Nearpod is used, students will receive a code at the beginning of class to enter in the website join.nearpod.com).

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been leading a Warrior Cat and Wings of Fire inspired role plays on Outschool for a couple of years. I have many students who have continued with the classes since day one. I have other students who have moved from one class to another, been in multiple at the same time or left and come back. This class has been created at the request of students who are ready to move beyond the cat and dragon worlds. They have asked for a space to have different kinds of characters and stories. We have a great time in these classes and I love reading the stories these kids create!
