Heroes and Villains: Academic and Creative Writing
Class experience
US Grade 6 - 9
In this semester class, students will produce four pieces of academic and creative writing surrounding the theme of heroes and villains. When I was in college, I took a class called "monster theory" that was really a writing class. It reframed the way I thought about writing; when learning how to write at higher levels, it doesn't have to be about boring or dry topics. Heroes and villains are found throughout mythology, movies, TV shows, and books, making it a flexible theme that any...
Students will analyze a book for the "heroes journey." Students will craft a creative piece following the "heroes journey." Students will give classmates feedback, verbally and/or in writing. Students will write a strong thesis statement taking a stance. Students will write an essay arguing their thesis. Students will choose a research question that is interesting to them. Students will locate sources to answer research question. Students will write a research paper.
I have a Bachelors of Fine Arts in creative writing from Brooklyn College and a Master's of Adolescent Social Studies Education from the College of Staten Island. In both of these programs, I excelled in both academic and creative writing and tutored other students. While briefly teaching in public school, I led writing projects.
Homework Offered

All student work will receive detailed feedback. Feedback will focus on clarity, focus, and form. There will be additional feedback parameters for each type of writing we do; for example, in part 3, students will receive feedback based on how well they argued their thesis statement. Students will receive corrections on spelling and grammar, unless they request not to. Each writing assignment is open ended with a lot of student choice. There is no set minimum length, with the exception of the argumentative essay, which must be at least 5 paragraphs. Students should endeavor to write as much as necessary to fully meet the needs of their prompt.Grades Offered
Students will need to type their written pieces in a word processor, such as Google Dogs or Microsoft Word. Students will receive an outline they can optionally use for Part 3 and Part 4.
