Class Experience

In a flexible schedule class, students will complete the class asynchronously. The class will be presented via weekly recordings which will be posted to the classroom area. Questions and discussion topics will be posted in the classroom area during each week as well so that students will have plenty of opportunities to interact with myself and others. Additionally, students are encouraged to share what they would like to learn. I will be adding the questions to the class recordings.

No experience or special knowledge is required to take this class.

Throughout our four weeks together, students will learn the following:
Week 1:
-The teacher will preview a story in which the main character experiences difficulties accepting when teachers and parents say “no” to their requests and allow students to practice their predicting skills.
-Discussion Topic of the week (posted in the classroom area for interaction)- Teacher and student(s) will discuss predictions made about the story and evidence to support answer.
Week 2:
Teacher will read the story in which the main character experiences difficulties accepting when teachers and parents say “no” to their requests. During the reading, the teacher will be asking comprehension questions that will prompt students to think about how the characters are feeling, their problems, and the solutions to these problems.
-Discussion Topic of the week (posted in the classroom area for interaction)- Teacher and students will reflect on the story (i.e. problems characters faced and the solutions presented in the story, how the story made us feel or made us think, connections to our life experiences, etc...) and clarify defintions of key vocabulary words.

Week 3:
-Teacher will review the steps that the main character followed that helped him accept when other adults say “no” to his requests. Additionally, the teacher will teach about contractions, what they are, when they are used, and present some examples of these. The teacher will show students how to make a booklet that would help them remember some contractions.
-Discussion Topic of the week (posted in the classroom area for interaction)- We will share the booklet we made.

Week 4:
Teacher will send a template of a star for students to write their names and decorate it, just like the main character did, to implement their artistic abilities and personalities.
-Discussion Topic of the week (posted in the classroom area for interaction)- We will share the stars we decorated.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a teacher and psychologist, I know how difficult it is for some children to accept when their requests are denied. I have also learned the power of a good story to teach children not only reading and comprehension skills, but also skills that would help them reach their potential as individuals.
