Class Experience

In this class I will redraw the learners monster/alien/creature with your guidance! Ideally they will Bring a monster drawing with them to class, or send me a photo beforehand. If they do not have a drawing they can quickly draw one in the beginning of class. Then, for the rest of the class, learners will help me redraw it. They will guide me as I bring their character to life!

In this class the learner is welcome to draw as I draw, but the purpose of this class is to get them excited about their creature creation by watching it come to life through my drawing. This means that they will be mostly focused on watching me draw rather than drawing themselves. I will be drawing on procreate so I can add colour and texture quickly.

As I redraw the learners creation I will ask questions about its personality, texture, colour, habitat, abilities and so on. These questions will prompt creative thinking by the learner and inspire creative decisions I make as I redraw the character.

The goal of this class is to get learners thinking creatively, to get them excited about learning to draw, and to help them see their own creative potential. Seeing their vision come to life will help to get them excited about art, storytelling, and using their imaginations.

I will be drawing at my own pace so that I can bring their creature creation to life in the tight 30 minute window. This will require me to draw quickly. I will engage the learner as I draw by prompting them to answer questions that will direct the artwork. Learners are not expected to draw along with me.

At the end of the class the learner will have a version of their drawing that can be excited about. Ideally this will inspire them to keep creating and to trust in their imagination.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from Alberta College of Arts and Design
I love to teach art, and specialize in drawing (wide variety of styles and techniques), procreate, watercolour, and acrylic painting. When I teach, I like to lead by example. This means that I draw, paint and create with my students. Throughout class I make myself available for questions, assistance and feedback.

I’ve been teaching art for over 5 years, and I have been creating art professionally since 2011. I have illustrated marketing materials for Denny’s, Newman’s Own, Duane Reade, Discovery Children’s Museum, The Mendes Foundation and other clients.

I also have extensive experience in advertising. I’ve been working as an art director (now creative director) for over 17 years. I worked in New York City for 10 years, Cambodia for one, and I currently work remotely out of my home office in Canada. In my advertising career I've made TV commercials, print campaigns, radio spots, online ads, videos and billboards (even some in Time Square.) I love thinking of cool ideas and bringing them to life. I am excited to share this skill with my students.

I believe that art is more than an applicable workplace skill. Art is a form of healthy self-expression and personal reflection. I also believe that art teaches the importance of patience and persistence. It is an education for the mind and soul.

For me, art is meditative. I own dozens of sketchbooks filled with drawings I’ve done throughout the years. Many pages contains a memory, emotion, thought or experience. As a mother, I find additional inspiration through my daughter and new son.

Art is everywhere, if you look for it. Children especially have a gift for finding beauty in the world. I hope to harness this gift so every child in my class can find their own unique, artistic voice.
