US Grade 3
Are you a 3rd grader going into 4th grade? Do you need to review or maintain your multiplication and division math skills? Do you like playing games in math class? Are you a visual learner? If so this is the class for you. This class is meant to review skills learned during the past school year. This is a multi-day class that will meet four times a week for one week. Each day will start with game time and move into hands-on instruction with practice activities. Game Time: We will play review games covering a variety of topics from your students previous grade level. Games may include tic, tac, toe, Memory, quick flash cards, and Jeopardy. Topics will include addition, subtraction, single digit multiplication & division, one and two step story problems, same denominator fractions on a number line, place value, and adding and subtracting of fractions and decimals (through the hundredth place). All students will solve the problems on a sheet of paper or individual whiteboard. Hands-on Lesson Time: Lessons will be focused on basic single digit multiplication and division strategies. These strategies will involve teacher demonstration and student participation using manipulatives and models. Models taught will involve drawing arrays, using number lines and repeated addition/subtraction. Teacher will use the I Do, We Do, You Do strategy for instruction. Students will watch the teacher demonstrate the strategy, then assist the teacher to complete an example, and lastly, complete an example on their own or in partnerships in Zoom breakout rooms. Partnerships will be set based on the student need and level as assessed during game play. Class 1- What is multiplication? Using arrays, repeated addition and grouping to solve single digit multiplication Class 2- Single digit multiplication using number lines and story problems. Class 3- What is division? How does division compare to multiplication? Solving division using arrays, and repeated subtraction. Class 4- Division in story problems along with distinguishing between multiplication and division in story problems. During Game time and Hands-on Lesson time students will have opportunities to share their strategies for solving the problem to teacher and fellow classmates. It is said that when you can teach someone a skill, that is when you have learned it yourself. Through sharing strategies students will be teaching the group and demonstrating their knowledge.
Learning Goals
