Class Experience

Each week we will meet to practice reading, social skills and have fun engaging in an activity with friends online. Students will read the book listed below before class so that we may discuss the book with friends during class. Each student will have the opportunity to read aloud, share opinions on the book and engage in a fun activity with peers. Our goal is to practice reading before and during class to sharpen our reading and comprehension skills.

You will need to purchase these books prior to class.

Reading List:
Week 1: Heidi Heckelbeck Casts A Spell-Wanda Coven
Description: Second-grade witch Heidi Heckelbeck wants revenge against Melanie, the meanest girl in school, so she decides to cast a forgetting spell on her right before the start of the school play.
Activity Week 1:
We will make a journal on our first day together. A print out will be given to you. You may wish to staple your journal together or use a three hole punch and ribbon to tie your journal together. You will need the print out and a few extra blank pages to make your journal.

Week 2: Heidi Heckelbeck in Disguise-Wanda Coven
Description: Witch Heidi is angry when mean Melanie Maplethorpe dresses as a witch for Halloween, but when she decides to retaliate, she almost loses all her friends.
Activity Week 2:
Wear a cool costume today and tell us why you chose the costume you chose and how you made it if you made your own costume. We will play a word game together too!
Outschool policy notes for costume week: 1. Masks are welcome, however, masks should be removed for identification during the first four minutes of class to meet safety and privacy policies. 2. Please note that costumes will be vetted by the educator to ensure that they meet Outschool standards (secular, age-appropriate, etc.).

Week 3:Heidi Heckelbeck Gets Glasses-Wanda Coven
Description: When she gets glasses, Heidi's friend Lucy gets a lot of attention at school, and eight-year-old Heidi decides that she must have glasses too, until her Aunt Trudy helps her to see that she really does not need them.
Activity Week 3:
We will play a word search game and a maze game together. All materials will be included in your handout you received on the first day of class. We will also discuss our dessert contest coming up next week!

Week 4: Heidi Heckelbeck and The Cookie Contest-Wanda Coven
Description: Heidi wants to win the Brewster Elementary cookie contest, but does not think through all the consequences of adding magic to her recipe.
Activity Week 4:
Let the contest begin! We will decorate a cookie or cup cake. There will be an award certificate given for the best looking cookie or cupcake! You will have a set amount of time to decorate your cupcake and we will vote for the best tasty treat at the end of class. You will bring an un-frosted cookie or cupcake to class and use whatever you wish to decorate your treat. You may choose fruit, icing, candy, or any other grown up approved toppings to your creation! (You may use a spoon or plastic butter knife to spread any frosting, yogurt or whipped cream on top of our cupcake or cookie.) Note: Since you are bringing a premade un-frosted cookie or cupcake to class, we will not be following a recipe, using the oven or using anything dangerous in the kitchen. If you have food allergies make sure that parents approve the pre-made item and toppings you bring to class prior to attending the class.

Hi. My name is Heather. The best students ask lots of questions and explore their ideas openly. My job is to inspire the questions and give students the tools they need to find their own answers. I earned my BFA from Madonna University in Michigan and my MEd. from Antioch New England in New Hampshire. I am a Nature Based Educator and Art Education Consultant with 25 years of experience working with children. Whether leading a hiking group, sketching, searching for mermaid tears, or giving a demonstration at Strawbery Banke Museum I infuse my days with imagination and curiosity. I am also the Head Youth Librarian at the Newmarket Public Library in New Hampshire!

My heart is in everything I do. Creativity is at the core of all of the classes I teach. Nature Journaling, Gardening, Nature Architects, Myth, Magic and Folklore, The Art of Letter Writing (via Owl post of course!), Morning Circle for Littles, Fine Art classes focusing on famous and not so famous artists, Forest Fairy Club, Wizard's Potions and Magic Wands, and Spelling Bees are just a few of the classes I offer. Ages range from 3 to 18.
