In this course we will be listening to a mix of classic and recent heavy metal music and discussing each track after listening. We will talk about what musical elements we're hearing, such as instrumentation, multi tracking, distortion, and common heavy metal elements like double-bass drumming, blastbeats, and shredding guitar solos. I will choose some of the tracks for each class, but the majority will come from recommendations from students. The goal is to open our musical minds up to the many worlds contained within heavy metal music, and hopefully find some new bands that we really enjoy!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I'm Spencer Zweifel. I love to teach classes about music, history, jazz, and general creativity. I'm a professional musician with 7 years and hundreds of gigs worth of real-life experience as a pianist in almost every style of music. I've worked as a music teacher and clinician for students of all ages and skill levels, as well as a private history tutor at the high school level. I got my bachelor's in jazz studies at the University of Northern Colorado with a minor in history, and will graduate with my master's in Jazz studies from William Paterson University in 2021. My goal through teaching is to help students become inquisitive critical thinkers, strong problem solvers, and powerful creative minds in order to become more well-rounded people. Something fun about me is that I've performed professionally in Alaska, New York City, and Pristina, Kosovo. Ask me about it!
