This is a 12 week FLEX history class using Kadir Nelson's , Heart & Soul- The History of America and African-Americans, as our textbook. Each week I will summarize the chapter (re-enactment style), share related videos, questions, and activities.
Class experience
US Grade 1 - 3
Students will hear the story of America and African Americans. It is a story of hope, inspiration and courage. We will cover the entire book, which consists of 12 chapters. I will cover the book, however in first person, more like a re-enactment. A video will be uploaded weekly, along with suggested additional free videos/documentaries and simple reinforcement craft activity. Students will share their crafts (pictures) to the classroom weekly as well as respond to a chapter thought question....
The high-level topics discussed over twelve chapters in this gentle picture book include: 1. The Declaration of Independence 2. Slavery 3. Abolition 4. The Civil War 5. Reconstruction 6. African American's westward movement 7. The Great Migration (Turn of the century) 8. Harlem Renaissance & Women's Vote 9. World War II 10. Innovation 11. Jim Crow 12. Revolution (Civil Rights Movement)
I am a licensed K-12 teacher in Virginia. I taught middle school Civics for a number of years, which includes a history component. I currently teach classes to students of all ages, including lower elementary in a home-school cooperative.
Homework Offered
Students will have a weekly thought question and craft to complete based on the chapter theme. Both of these things should be posted to the classroom.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

A copy of the text: Heart And Soul- The Story of America and African Americans by Kadir Nelson All craft materials will be everyday household materials and available immediately upon enrollment.
The text used is an extended picture book. Each chapter is roughly 3-4 pages, which I will narrate first person. Students may need some assistance understanding complex themes such as slavery/racism, depending on prior exposure.
