Description
Class Experience
Students should be able to verbalize the important aspects of relationships by the end of the course, and be able to 1) know the warning signs of an abusive relationship, and 2) be more prepared to help a friend if they see red flags in their relationship.
I have been teaching high school health at the public level. I am a state certified teacher in Florida. I also have personal experience with counseling crisis line callers, with informal counseling and with people (women with children) escaping abusive situations.
Learners must watch the videos before class discussion. After the discussion, learners will be encouraged to journal their thoughts about the material (this can be shared or kept private, as decided by the learner).
There will be no assessment.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Please be aware that sensitive topics will be covered related to abuse. Nothing will be mentioned in a sensationalized way, but with delicacy and compassion. We want to be positioned to help others - so knowing that someone being "controlling" in a dating relationship could be a red flag for possible abuse in the future is a good thing to know - but it's also very sad that people treat others this way. Please contact me before the class starts if you have any concerns.
