3 in-class hoursClass Experience
Relationships - we all have them! And all of us are unhealthy in some way! So how do we have healthy relationships? The first 3 weeks, we will cover the fundamentals of healthy relationships: boundaries, communication, respect, trust, intimacy, commitment and fairness. Then we will spend 3 weeks covering what abusive relationships look like, how to avoid them and how to help someone who has been "sucked into" one. The class will be taught via video lessons (one per week) followed by class discussion. In order for the class discussion to be useful, students should have watched the video beforehand. The videos (approx 30-40 min each) will be available to be watched at the learner's leisure, while class discussions (30 min) will be live at the same time every week. Total instruction time is approximately 6 hours. Full interaction via video will be possible, although learners may feel comfortable using the chat option as well. This subject may be "triggering" if someone has had experience with abuse. I use real-world examples at times and it may be distressing to students to know that these kinds of things actually happen. Please be fully aware of this and prepared before registering for this class. Details: Week 1: Boundaries Week 2: Communication Week 3: Fundamentals, finished (respect, trust, intimacy, commitment, fairness) Week 4: Abuse, part 1 Week 5: Abuse, part 2 Week 6: Abuse, conclusion Refund policy: The class will be fully refunded if a learner withdraws before class begins. 75% will be refunded if a learner withdraws within the first week; after that, no refund.
Learning Goals
Students should be able to verbalize the important aspects of relationships by the end of the course, and be able to 1) know the warning signs of an abusive relationship, and 2) be more prepared to help a friend if they see red flags in their relationship.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Please be aware that sensitive topics will be covered related to abuse. Nothing will be mentioned in a sensationalized way, but with delicacy and compassion. We want to be positioned to help others - so knowing that someone being "controlling" in a dating relationship could be a red flag for possible abuse in the future is a good thing to know - but it's also very sad that people treat others this way. Please contact me before the class starts if you have any concerns.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching high school health at the public level. I am a state certified teacher in Florida. I also have personal experience with counseling crisis line callers, with informal counseling and with people (women with children) escaping abusive situations.
