Class Experience

*Students will understand what a trigger is and what some of their own triggers are
*Students will understand what happens in our brain when we experience anger
*Students will understand the power of anger and how to use its power in good ways
*Students will understand what it means to ride the waves of their anger and other feelings
*Students will understand what the Iceberg Concept is and how it applies to anger
*Students will understand what other feelings come with anger (or cause their anger)
*Students will learn and know the difference between assertive, aggressive and passive expression of their anger
*Students will learn and practice different ways of assertively expressing their anger (such as nonviolent communication, breathing practices, creating and art, and mindful movement)
We think these social-emotional practices are some of the most important tools kids can learn growing up, tools that will guide them for the rest of their lives! 
 
Our approach to teaching about emotions for kids is especially unique because we think that kids can learn about serious topics and life skills while having fun and feeling engaged.  Besides using some of our own animated videos, drawing, and other interactive games, we also have created professionally-designed journal pages for kids to better explore the topic we are learning about each week!

Ms. Kelsey says about her experience with Mindfulness and Emotional Intelligence:
I started teaching Mindfulness and Emotional Intelligence when I was a primary teacher in inner-city Chicago because I needed it the most!  I was constantly running around with a to-do list in my mind, which meant that I wasn't fully present for my students, or myself. I also noticed that many students would experience deep emotions that often kept them from learning in the classroom. That is when I realized these are the kind of life skills that kids need to learn while growing up. I have taught Mindfulness and other Social-Emotional concepts and skills to thousands of kids (online and in classrooms around the World)!  

Ms. Anamaria:
Some fundamental skills cemented in my classroom are self-expression, self-exploration, confidence and a focus on growth.
I am currently participating in The Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program from UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, Sounds True, and the Awareness Training Institute. I have been teaching for almost one year! The subjects I have covered are mindfulness, art and literacy.  Last summer, I taught an Art and Literacy course for underserved communities through CFCArts as a teaching artist.  I also mentor students on a one-on-one basis using a mixture of art and mindfulness. However, my focus and passion currently rests on teaching Mindfulness and SEL skills through the Whole nHappy.

Sharing these tools with children has been so enriching for my heart.  I know from my own experience that meditation is a lifelong practice that  plants the seeds for a joyful life. I look forward to our time together in the classroom.
Each week, we assign a homework challenge to help extend learning at home and practice what we have learned in class. Some of these challenges will be journaling, doing a worksheet, or reflecting, and others will be creating a craft or actually practicing something we learned at home. 
Students are not required to purchase any extra materials!  Weekly, parents and students will receive a handout and journal page that reviews what we learned and extends your child's learning at home.  

During the weekly classes, students will need paper and something to write or draw with to carry out the activities we engage in. 
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
We do not include formal assessments of the learners, but we are always asking and ensuring the learners in our courses understand the materials and concepts we teach. 
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Parents, please let us know if there is anything specific you would like us to know about your child before beginning the course. We try to adapt all of our materials and teaching style to meet the individual kids in our courses where they are and help them grow from that point.

*If you feel your child would benefit from one of our courses, but it is not within your budget, please send us a message. We offer 4 discounted (50% off) enrollments per month in our courses.

* Make-up lessons: If you miss a class, we provide a recording link of the class, as well as extra materials posted in the classroom.

*We truly value our own energy and time, and put all of my energy into these lessons; therefore, we will wait for 10-15 minutes for individual lessons, however if you are later than 15 minutes it will be counted as a tardy

*Message us if you enroll more than one child, as we give a discount for siblings.
