Description
Class Experience
Haiku ... a traditional poem of 5 - 7- 5 Students will explore the origins of the Haiku poem as a Japanese art. They'll experience both traditional Haiku as well as more modern forms of Haiku, including spoken word Haiku! Haiku can be both Serious and Hilarious and the students will have a chance to practice both! Haiku is also the art of less words to say more, we'll practice this in our own poems using the 5-7-5 format and distilling our language to the core essence Students will work...
Each student will produce at least 2 individual haiku poems and 1 small group poem (depending on the size of our group - if there's more interest in individual poems we can stick with that for our time together) They'll learn the origins of Haiku Poetry and how it has grown over time as an art form taught in most high schools. They'll experience haiku from the serious to the hilarious and will have the chance breakdown each poem we read together into syllables as well as meaning
I'm an arts therapist and have worked with children for many years using the arts as way to go deeper into their experiences. I'm also a published author and was a spoken word poet in the NY and NJ area.
