The class is structured into a six-week course that meets two times each week and will go over the three main essay writing concepts. The first two weeks will be spent learning about the idea generation and brainstorming phase of writing an essay. This will include discussing brainstorming techniques such as listing, freewriting, and mind mapping. Weeks three and four will focus on the essay formation and actual writing of the essay. Some concepts covered will include body paragraph structure and writing effective sentences. Lastly, this course will cover the editing phase of the writing process in weeks five and six. There will be materials to convey each concept in addition to practice prompts where students will actively engage in each phase to effectively learn each concept in order to apply this to future essays.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of the writing process and will in turn become much more skilled writers. Students will learn brainstorming techniques such as mind mapping, how to create a template for their essays to carry out the actual writing of their content, and will learn how to effectively edit their papers by learning strategies for the editing phase.
