Beginner Level
Although it's a long way from "5 Nights at Freddy's," Edgar Allan Poe is just as fun and horror-filled. In this horror themed hour, we will read Edgar Allan Poe's poem, "Annabel Lee" together as a class. We will explore unfamiliar vocabulary, look at the gothic/horror motifs, and discuss the parallels between the poem and Poe's life. Then we will look at the poetic structure of the poem (the rhythm, line length, rhyme scheme, use of assonance etc.) as a springboard to make our own similarly styled poem which can be shared in class. If you are looking for more classes which explore Poe's poetry and short stories, I'd love to have your learner in "Haunted Poetry 2: The Raven" or "The Great Unknown: Three Horror Classics for Teens."
Learning Goals
Students will become familiar with Edgar Allen Poe's poem "Annabel Lee," discuss horror as a motif in the poem, and review poetic tools like rhythm, rhyme and repetition. Students will also produce their own horror themed poem.
