Featured at GameCon 2022! 🗝 Trapped in an abandoned, haunted house, learners must solve puzzles and find all the keys in order to escape! Old Lady Smith was an eccentric former English Language Arts teacher who enjoyed testing her students with tricky spellings! She has planted keys all over the house but students must solve a puzzle to access each one. Escape before nightfall to avoid a confrontation with the ghost of Old Lady Smith! ☠ 📝 Students will discover all the ways that the "special ending" /shus/ can be spelled and will solve puzzles using sample words with each spelling. 🙋 Students will work as a team to decode puzzles and determine their next move. Note: This is an interactive class. Students should be ready to either choose an action or pass to another teammate. Cameras and microphones are expected to be on for an engaging experience for all. Please reach out to me before class if the student plans to attend the class but not take an active role in decision-making. All learners are welcome, even if they'd like to just watch. It is important to me that all my students are comfortable in class. I can make accommodations if notified in advance. 📖 Learners need to be able to read at a third-grade reading level at a minimum, in order to read the words included in the puzzles. 📝 Students will receive a word list before class that may assist them with the puzzles. 🌟 This class is a slide presentation with animations revealing areas to explore, clues, keys, and locked areas. The setting is creepy, but not scary. Creepy sound effects are used. 🔥 Students who have taken my 3rd, 4th, 5th, or Middle School spelling classes will find this class to be a powerful review activity. 🔥 Students who have taken my "Daily Skills Practice with Reading and Spelling" class will recognize the Old Lady Smith storyline but will experience a prequel! 🔥 Learners who are new to my classes will get a sneak peek at one of the special endings I teach in my ongoing classes to help students become confident spellers. 📝 Students will receive a follow-up activity for more practice with the words in the escape room and the word list. 🚫 In order to get the most out of this experience for ALL students, we start ON TIME. If a student logs in more than three minutes past our start time, they will not be allowed in. It is important to know the back story of this escape room in order to be successful and to be enjoyable. Students arriving late will miss important plot details and may hinder the team's progress. 🌟 Current leaderboard: July 21, 2022 33 minutes, 44 seconds Team DRT with three players. September 1, 2022. 39 minutes, 13 seconds Team AAHM with four players. June 28, 2022 39 minutes, 20 seconds Team "V" with one player. I am a state-certified Elementary Teacher who has become aware of and greatly concerned about the absence of structured spelling instruction in most schools today. In my private reading tutoring practice, I have watched my students become strong and independent spellers by using my approach based on the Phono-graphix method.
