Description
Class Experience
In this class, we will be using the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen as our main text. We will be studying literary elements such as setting, theme, character development and plot. We will also explore non-fiction texts about survival. Students will learn to use text evidence to support their answers. During this class we will also have two writing assignments. We will work on drafts in class but students will be expected to spend some time editing their paper at home on their own time. The...
Students will be able to identify a story's theme, setting and understand character development. Students will also be able to use text clues to find answers to questions. Students will be familiarized with expository and fictional writing and be able to write a short sample of each. We will walk through brainstorming, rough drafts, editing and final copies.
Students will be expected to read the book Hatchet over the course of our 16 classes. Chapters will be assigned at the end of each class. Student will also have two writing assignments to complete for this class. Some of the work will be done in class but there will need to be time spent out of class to research, draft, edit and write their papers. Students will have two vocabulary quizzes. We will study in class and practice but outside studying is encouraged.
Grades will be given for each writing assignment based off a rubric that will be provided to each student.
1 hour 50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
The book Hatchet does contain some themes that may be upsetting to some students. I would suggest previewing the book ahead of time. Some things that might be upsetting may be the pilot having a heart attack and dying, the feelings of loneliness and sadness the main character feels, the topic of divorce, and injuries. There may be others but all are done tastefully and in a way that moves the story along.
