Class Experience

5 lessons//5 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Week 1 Recipes: Knickerbocker Glories and Wand Breadsticks
In this lesson, students will tackle the creation of Knickerbocker Glories and Wand Breadsticks. These recipes have a lot of flexibility! Knickerbocker Glories can include any flavor of fruit and Jell-O. Students get to shape their Wand Breadsticks however they like. They can use pictures from online as inspiration or create their own design.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Week 2 Recipes: Hogwarts House Meringues and Rock Cakes
In this lesson, students will make Hogwarts House Meringues and Rock Cakes. The House Meringues are a little tricky because they involve whipping egg whites. This can take a little bit of time, but it is a great technique for any baker to learn and practice! The Rock Cakes are a simple, tasty snack that can include raisins if students choose.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Week 3 Recipes: Treacle Tart and Custard Creams
In this lesson, students will bake a Treacle Tart and Custard Creams. Treacle Tart is Harry Potter's favorite dessert, so it will be fun for learners to decide if they like it too! The Treacle Tart involves making and rolling a crust, which is another excellent skill for bakers to learn and practice. The Custard Creams can be colored yellow to be the Canary Creams that Fred and George make.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Week 4 Recipes: Pumpkin Pasties and Lemon Drops
In this lesson, students will make Pumpkin Pasties and Lemon Drops. Pumpkin Pasties are like little pumpkin pies with some extra crust. They are pretty tasty! Lemon Drops are the first snack to be mentioned in the entire Harry Potter book series. They are a little tricky because the recipe involves boiling candy to a certain temperature, but they are definitely worth a try.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Week 5 Recipes: Pumpkin Juice and Sorting Hat Cupcakes
In this final lesson, students will tackle the creation of Pumpkin Juice and Sorting Hat Cupcakes. Pumpkin Juice is a quick, easy recipe to follow. The Sorting Hat Cupcakes recipe has quite a few steps to it, but it is a very fun treat. Once complete, students will be able to bite into their cupcakes to see which house they belong to; the filling will tell them whether they belong in Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, or Slytherin.
  • Students will have fun making Harry Potter inspired recipes!
I am a Harry Potter lover! I spent 4 years teaching English in a public school. I read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone with my 7th graders each year, and I would bring in some of these Harry Potter themed snacks when we watched the movie together!
Students will need multiple bowls for mixing ingredients. Baking sheets and an oven are necessary. A sauce pan. Knives and spoons. Specific recipes will be provided at the beginning of each week and will include a list of necessary kitchen materials.
Students will be using an oven, handling knives, and using ingredients that require proper handling and hygiene (eg. uncooked eggs).
