Each week we will be reading and discussing Harry Potter together! There is no background knowledge required, except how to read a large chapter book. Evaluation is through the reading and in class discussion of the books in class. There is weekly reading for this class. In class each week we will read in together, and at the end of the course we will have a fun Kahoot to see what you learned! We will also spend time looking at vocabulary and the meaning of words. The goal is for students to learn new words in an interactive way while enjoying a book they read. Time will also be spent discussing the different themes of Harry Potter, which is a reading skill that all students must master to understand text completely. We will also discuss characters, plot, resolution, setting, and other elements of a story as we go through the class. You will read the chapters before class, and then we will explore the literary elements, our favorite parts in class, and answer comprehension questions. This an interactive class to attend with other friends OR even to meet new friends from around the globe. Week 1: We will introduce ourselves and talk about our favorite character from the Harry Potter Series. We will play a fun Kahoot as a review of the previous books. I will lay out the format of the class and we will finish class by reading a little from chapter 1. Students will be assigned chapters 1-8 for week two's class and will be provided with guided questions that will help them have the class discussion in week two. Week 2: We will discuss chapters 1-8 together. Students will guide the discussion using the a Socratic Discussion strategy (Super Starters) that I will teach them. We will use this strategy throughout the book club so students have an opportunity to practice classroom discussion etiquette. We will talk about the theme of "sacrifice," and how that can be applied to other stories or their own life. Students will be assigned chapters 9-18 for the next class. Week 3: We will discuss chapters 9-18 together. Students will guide the discussion using Super Starters. Students will be assigned chapters 19-27 for the next class. We will explore the theme of "Choices" and how it applies to the many decisions that the characters make along the journey of this 7th book. Post it notes will be encouraged starting in this class for students to track and recall their thinking for classroom discussions. Week 4: We will discuss chapters 19-27 together. The theme of Good versus Evil will be a topic that is investigated. We will connect the idea of good versus evil to current events in the world to bring meaning to the discussion. Students will continue to use Super Starters for their discussion format. Students will be assigned chapters 28-37 for the next class. Week 5: We will discuss chapters 28-37 together. We will discover how each character showed the trait of "Perseverance." We will celebrate the end of the book, and talk about what we predict will happen in the future by imagining our own ending! Many times the student's discussion lead us into a very rich and interesting conversation. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn together and from each other while they discuss a book they love.
