Description
Class Experience
Read alouds are a great way for students to hone their own reading skills while sharing their experiences and ideas. In this ongoing class, students will gather three times each week for a different picture book read aloud. As I read the book, they will engage with the book and each other by responding both to questions that I ask and to comments from other students. Topics and reading concepts practiced will vary depending on which book we are reading. In some meetings I will let...
Read alouds are a great way for students of various reading levels to practice reading skills together. Students will practice listening and conversation skills as well as reading concepts including, but not limited to, inferring, predicting, and summarizing. Read alouds build vocabulary, improve comprehension, and build attention span. They also help students improve fluency and expression in their own reading. Students benefit from read alouds in so many ways, it's impossible to list them all here.
Kids love read alouds and so do I! I truly believe in the benefits of read alouds and have been using them to support learning in my classroom for over a decade. I try to bring my read alouds to life by using more of a performance style than a typical narration when it feels right for the book.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour 15 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
Children's literature includes a broad range of topics and subjects. I select books that are age appropriate. They might contain magic, mythical creatures, or sensitive topics. I will do my best to choose non-controversial books. If you have particular content concerns, please communicate them to me and I will try to adjust my book choices accordingly. Students will listen as I read; they will not be practicing reading aloud themselves. Rather, they will practice the other skills I mentioned in the description and their own reading both aloud and silently will improve by hearing me model.
