Student will learn and use the Handwriting Without Tears approach to printing lowercase letters. This method emphasizes that all letters are made up of basic shapes--big lines, little lines, big curves, and little curves. As each letter is taught, the cues give the student an auditory link to help form the letters. Each class session will begin with a finger warm up and strengthening exercises for small finger muscles. Then each letter will be introduced and the students will: *identify the letter and the strokes used in formation *create the letter out of play-doh *practice writing the letter on a dry erase board *print the letter on paper Letters will be taught in this order: c, o, s, v, w, t, a, d, g, u, i, e, l, k, y, j, p, n, m, h, b, r, f, q, x, z Students should already have established hand dominance and know how to hold a writing utensil. This class is appropriate for learners just beginning to write or those that need extra practice and repetition. *Please note that this class will need a minimum of three learners to operate.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Students may need a parent to check in on their letter formation occasionally.
Supply List
Students will need the following materials at each class session: *play doh or clay and tray (used for rolling pieces to form letters) *dry erase board, marker, and eraser *a pencil, marker, and lined paper (I usually prefer young writers to practice in pencil. However, it is sometimes hard to see due to lighting so a darker colored marker or pen shows up better.) *a flat surface for writing comfortably
3 files available upon enrollment
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
As a former kindergarten/preschool teacher, I know how important it is for young children to know how to write correctly. Handwriting Without Tears is a great approach for handwriting--it is simple, methodical, and gives students a basic cue to remember proper letter formation. I enjoy giving students this foundation as handwriting is often not emphasized in schools in favor of other core subjects. I will offer simple lessons and lots of praise for young learners!
